Johnson Tagged as Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. - South Alabama sophomore outfielder Rett Johnson earns his first player of the week award off a .625 week at the plate.

Starting the week 7 for 7 at the plate with a walk, Johnson worked on base three times in Friday night's game, and hit his first home run of the season to tie the game during the series-clinching win over Texas State. During his four-RBI Thursday night game, Johnson struck a two-rbi single in the first inning to put the Jags ahead, singled and scored in the third inning, singled again in the fourth, laid down a sacrifice bunt in the sixth to put two runners in scoring position, then scored two more Jags with a two-RBI single.

Johnson's Sun Belt Player of the Week campaign is a part of his .328 average on the season, with 21 runs, 14 RBIs, 11 walks, five doubles, and one home run. Starting in 32 games this season so far, he leads the team with eight stolen bases, and holds a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage across 56 chances.

Southern Miss pitcher J.B. Middleton was nominated as SBC Pitcher of the Week.

Johnson will retake the field along with the rest of the Jags as they head to New Orleans for a Wednesday night game against the University of New Orleans.
