Palmeros Takes Home Medalist Honors; Jaguars Record Top 5 Finish at Fifth Annual Evie Odom Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. | Daniela Palmeros finished four-under for the tournament to win by three strokes and pick up her first medalist honors Saturday afternoon at the Fifth Annual Evie Odom Invitational held at the Princess Anne Country Club. Palmeros becomes the second Jaguar to record a tournament victory this fall (Anna Behnsen – Inverness Intercollegiate).

The three-round, 206 by Palmeros marked not only a new career low for the freshman, but is the second-lowest, 54-hole score in program history, just two strokes behind Julie Hovland's program mark where she fired a three-round 204 at the USA Intercollegiate (9/5-7/20).

Palmeros recorded five birdies on the day and posted a final-round, three-under 67 – a new career low – as she was one of two players to do so on Saturday.

Palmeros tied for the lowest score on par threes with two other players as she averaged 2.89 strokes, and her 3.92 strokes average on par fours was tied for second-best at the event. Her 11 birdies at the tournament were also tied with Maryland's C. Mangeat for most amongst the 72-player field.

As a team, South Alabama placed fourth in the 12-team field after finishing with a three-round, 864 (291-288-285). The Jags' 35 birdies were tied with Furman for third-most.

Behnsen continued her strong fall campaign, finishing in a six-way tie for seventh. Behnsen was two-over (71-70-71—212), and the seventh-place finish markedĀ

Head Coach Marcelo HuarteĀ
- On the play of Daniela Palmeros:
"I'm extremely proud out Daniela (Palmeros). She took a big step forward this week and really showed what she's capable of. It was her first time in contention to win a collegiate event, and she handled the situation like a veteran. I'm most proud of her resiliency. She was able to rebound from some setbacks early on in the semester, which is a testament to her composure and determination."

- On the potential of the group:
"We've had some great individual performances this fall and currently have four players on this young team with a collegiate win. It speaks to the fire-power we have and the potential to be something special when we come together as a team. We're still growing and learning, and we understand that success is a process. This offseason, we'll get back to work, use the winter break to reset, and return ready to chase the goals we know we are capable of achieving."
