Jags Hit the Road to Take on Louisiana

MOBILE, Ala. - The South Alabama men's basketball team will hit the road to take on Louisiana on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. CT in the Cajundome.

Last Time Out 

After trailing throughout Thursday night, the Jaguars made a ferocious comeback with 10 minutes remaining and took the lead at the 5:27 mark off a flurry of big-time buckets from Judah Brown, but the Jags couldn't find a way to sustain a lead down the stretch. Brown finished with 21 points and four three-pointers, while the Jags shot 20.0 percent from three-point range and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line. 


Notes

-South Alabama has stood out as one of the most efficient defensive teams in the entire country this season. The Jags have excelled at minimizing fouls and converting defensive stops into scoring opportunities. South ranks eighth in the country in fouls per game (13.1), 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.64), eighth in turnover margin (4.9+), ninth in turnovers per game (9.5), and 37th in fastbreak points (14.1). The Jags also sit at the top of the Sun Belt in all five of these categories

- The Jags have made a living this season by applying intense zone pressure schemes to opposing offenses. They rank seventh in the country in field goal percentage defense (37.5), 11th in scoring defense (62.5), and 19th in steals per game (9.5). We want our calling card to be our defense. We want to play our zone with force and discipline."

-  South has hit a slump offensively, shooting an average of 37.9 percent from the field,  24.3 percent from behind the arc, and 58.4 percent from the charity stripe in the last three games. After averaging 75 points per game through the first 18 contests, the Jags have come just short of scoring 70 points in the previous four games. 

- Despite suffering their third straight loss, Judah Brown had another standout night for the Jaguars. Brown scored 21 points with four three-pointers and three rebounds during last night's contest. He has logged two or more triples in 15 games this season and set his career-high with 24 points and seven three-pointers against Mobile earlier this year. - Additionally, Brown ranks at the top of the Sun Belt and 37th in the nation in three-point percentage, shooting 42.3 percent from downtown. He has knocked down 60 total three-pointers this season, and the Jags are 12-4 when he makes two or more triples in a game. 

Myles Corey has led the way for the Jaguars throughout this season. He ranks 10th in the Sun Belt in points per game, averaging 14.4. Corey ranks sixth in the conference in assists per game (4.3), sixth in field goal percentage (44.6), and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). Corey has scored double figures 15 times this season, and got back into double figures against ULM, scoring 17 points and dishing out six assists. 

- The Jags are 13-2 when scoring 70 points or more this season and 1-6 when scoring less than 70 points.  For the first time this season, the Jaguars have lost three games in a row.  USA is also 12-7  when limiting their opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field.


About Louisiana

- Derrick Zimmerman was named the interim head coach on Thursday, Dec 19. Zimmerman is in his fourth season at Louisiana. He previously served on the staff at his alma mater Mississippi State for three seasons.
- With 987 points, Kentrell Garnett is closing in on becoming the 52nd player in program history to reach that mark.
- The Cajuns are third in the Sun Belt Conference in turnover margin (2.0). They're tied with Arkansas State but trail South Alabama (5.5).
