MONROE, La. – South Alabama men's basketball fell to ULM 77-66 Monday night in Fant Ewing Coliseum. The Jags dropped to 14-7 on the year and 6-3 in Sun Belt play, while ULM improved to 5-17 on the season and picked up their first win in conference play, making them 1-8.
The Jaguars struggled to get anything going offensively, shooting 34.3 percent from the field (24-70) and 25.6 percent from three-point range (10-39). ULM hit 11 three-pointers, knocked down 24-of-26 from the charity stripe, and pulled 44 rebounds compared to South Alabama's 35, giving the Jags their second straight loss.
Dylan Fasoyiro led the way for the Jaguars, posting 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while going 5-for-5 from the free-throw line with three rebounds and two steals. Myles Corey chipped in 14 points with seven rebounds and a steal, and John Broom added 12 points with four triples.
South Alabama opened the game strong and earned an early 11-7 lead after Brady, Fasoyiro, and Broom all knocked down triples.
ULM answered with an 8-0 run off of two three-pointers of their own to take a 15-11 advantage at the 9:40 mark in the first half.
Following two made triples from Cooper and Broom and a coast-to-coast bucket for JJ Wheat, the Jaguars took a slight lead, 22-21, with 4:47 left in the half.
The Warhawks stayed consistent down the stretch and closed the period on a 14-5 run to leave the Jags trailing 35-27 at the break.
Things seemed to shift for the Jaguars at the start of the second half as Dunning nailed two layups in the lane, and Fasyiro knocked in a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 38-33 with 17:24 left in the game.
ULM took back control and earned its largest lead, 57-41, at the 9:09 mark on the clock.
South Alabama continued to fight and pulled the deficit back to single digits with under a minute left, but it was not enough, as Louisiana-Monroe would secure the victory 77-66.
Notes
- Tonight's loss is the largest margin of defeat for the Jaguars this season, losing by 11 points. The previous deficit came earlier this season at Ole Miss on Nov.8 (64-54).
- South Alabama has now dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.
- The Jags took care of the basketball in tonight's contest only committing six turnovers.
- Barry Dunning Jr. led the Jags on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds. Dunning has grabbed eight or more rebounds in the last four games.
