Jags Visit Troy for Second In-State Clash in Seven Days

MOBILE, Ala. –  The South Alabama men's basketball team will face its arch-rival Troy for the second time in seven days Saturday evening in Trojan Arena. Due to hazardous travel conditions caused by winter storm Enzo, the Jaguars matchup against ULM and the Trojans game against Southern Miss were both moved to Monday, Jan.27.

Last Time Out

After holding a 20-point advantage at the half, the Jaguars faltered, committing 14 second-half turnovers and trailing 63-62 with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Dunning Jr. would go straight to the rack, drawing a foul to drain both free throws before getting a hand on Troy's inbound pass to disrupt the Trojans' final heave at the buzzer and earn the 64-63 win. 


Notes you Need to Know

- South Alabama ranks eighth in the country in turnovers per game, averaging 9.3 per contest. The Jags logged their first negative assist-to-turnover ratio this season as they logged 15 turnovers and 12 assists in the last game against Troy. In total, the Jags have registered eight turnovers or less in nine games this season

- Graduate forward Judah Brown has been lights out from behind the arc since returning for his fifth year of college basketball and third year with the Jags. Brown is averaging 10.7 points per game while leading the Sun Belt and ranking 11th in the nation in three-point percentage (45.0). Brown has knocked down 54 total three-pointers this season, and the Jags are 12-3 when he makes two three-pointers or more in a game. Brown surpassed his career-high against Mobile, logging 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. 

- The Jags are 13-2`when scoring 70 points or more this season and 1-3 when scoring less than 70 points. USA is also 12-5 when limiting their opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field. Best Sun Belt Start in 17 years 

- South Alabama is off to its best start to Sun Belt play since 2008, with five double-figure conference victories. Since the beginning of conference play, South ranks first in scoring defense (57.8), field goal percentage defense (34.6), three-point percentage defense (26.6), and scoring margin (14.7+). The Jaguars currently sit at the top of the Sun Belt with a one-game lead over Arkansas State and App State. 

-It's been extremely apparent this season that the Jaguars have one of the most impressive defensive units in conference and the country, but since starting conference play the Jaguars have ranked in the top five in the conference games in several offensive categories. The Jags are first in assists (16.3), fourth in points per game (72.5), third in field goal percentage (44.5), and third in three-point percentage (36.0). 

-After being ranked at a program-high No.82 earlier this season the Jags have fallen back to No.105 in the most recent NET rankings and No.106 in the Kenpom rankings. Chef Corey 

- Through 19 contests, Myles Corey has shown he's one of the premier players in the Sun Belt and the country. He ranks fifth in the Sun Belt and top 100 in the country in points per game (15.4). Corey ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game (4.4), eighth in field goal percentage (44.6), and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). Corey has scored double figures 14 times this season but has hit a rough patch as of late as he's scored 11 combined points in the last two games. 

- USA leads the Sun Belt in assists per game, contributing 16.11 per contest. Four players average two or more assists per game -- Myles Corey (4.4), JJ Wheat (2.9), Randy Brady (2.9), and Barry Dunning Jr. (2.0) . As a squad, the Jags have tallied 14 games with 15 or more assists this season. Long Ball

- The Jags average the most three-pointers made per game in the conference with 9.9 per game and have made a Sun Belt-leading 71 total three-pointers in conference games. Brown (2.8) and Corey (1.7) also rank inside the top 20 in the conference in 3's per game.


Series History vs. Troy

- South Alabama leads the all-time series 31-14. The Jags have won eight of the last 11 matchups against Trojans, but have fallen in the last three on the road. South has a 12-7 record at Troy head coach Richie Riley also owns a 10-3 record over Troy throughout his time with South Alabama.


About Troy

  • Tayton Conerway leads the conference in steals per game (3.2) and ranks second in assists per game (4.8). He also was the only Trojan to put up double figures, finishing with 23 points with four three-pointers, five rebounds, four steals, and four assists. 
  • Head Coach Scott Cross has won three straight games over the Jaguars at Trojan Arena. While at Troy He has put together a 91-83 record, which includes three straight seasons of 20 or more wins. 
  • Troy outrebounded the Jaguars 42-35 and three different players with three steals or more (Conerway 4, Dowd 3, and Rigsby Jr. 3).
