Last Time Out

After trailing by 16 points at the half, the Jags came storming back to pull within one possession with four minutes remaining, but Western Illinois was able to hold on in the final seconds as the Jags fell 64-63 Tuesday night in the second game of the Jaguar Classic. Despite the loss, South Alabama had four players finish with double figures in scoring, and two players recorded a double-double. Myles Corey powered the Jags offensively, finishing with 17 points and two assists. Randy Brady was a powerful presence in the paint, securing a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Hometown kid Barry Dunning Jr. kept the Jags in the game throughout the second half, scoring 13 points, grabbing ten rebounds, and swiping three steals. JJ Wheat played elite defensively in the final five minutes, scoring 13 points with two rebounds. 

South Alabama Notes

• The Jaguars have prided themselves on their defensive effort this season. USA currently holds its opponents to 65.1 points per contest, which ranks first in the Sun Belt conference and 62nd in the country. 

• South also ranks second in the conference in opponent field goal percentage (39.3). 

• Corey ranks first in the Sun Belt in points per game (18.4) and second in field goal percentage (51.8). He also leads the Jags in assists (5.5) and minutes per game (34.6). 

• Head Coach Richie Riley is one win away from 150 wins in his career. He currently sports an overall record of 149-114. 

• South Alabama continues to take good care of the basketball. The Jags have yet to record a negative-assist-to-turnover-ratio in a game. They also lead the conference in turnover margin with a 3.57 (USA: 69 OPP: 94) and assist-to-turnover-ratio with a 1.55 (A:107 TO: 69). 

• Brady has dominated the last two games, averaging 3.6 assists and 9.5 rebounds per game.

• Dunning Jr. also had an efficient night against Western Illinois, scoring 13 points and corralling ten rebounds.

• South Alabama shot an electric 65.3 percent from the field against UIW. This is the third-highest field goal percentage in Mitchell Center history and the highest in a single game since 2009.

• Wheat has totaled 15 assists in the past three games. 

• John Broom ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in rebounds per game, pulling down seven rebounds per contest. In five out of seven games this year, Broom has grabbed eight rebounds or more. 

• Judah Brown has been a dominant scorer for the Jags this season. Against Mercer, Brown put up 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, marking the fourth time he has scored 15 points or more this year. He also ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in total three-pointers with 22. 

• USA closed the 2024 Jaguar Classic presented by Circle K with a 1-1 record, picking up an 84-63 win over Incarnate Word before losing to Western Illinois 64-63 on Tuesday night.  

• The Jags have a 13-5 overall record in MTE tournaments and a 5-3 record in home MTE's. 

Series History

• South Alabama owns a 6-3 advantage over Alcorn State in the all-time series. 

• The Jags have a 48-7 all-time record over teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. 

• USA won the last matchup against the Braves in December of 2011. They trounced Alcorn State with a dominant 102-62 victory. 

• The last time the Jags faced a SWAC opponent was last season when they defeated Alabama A&M 83-67 in the Mitchell Center on Dec. 21.

• The Braves have been led by Omari Hamilton, who averages 9.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. 

• Alcorn is third in the SWAC in free throw percentage, shooting 71.3 percent from the charity stripe.
