South Alabama Welcomes Alabama A&M to Close out Non-Conference Play

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team (6-5) will return to the Mitchell Center for its' final non-conference game of 2023 against Alabama A&M on Thursday, Dec.21 at 7 p.m. CST.

Last Time Out

South Alabama picked up a dominating 91-74 victory over Spring Hill two weeks ago, clinching 100 wins at South Alabama for head coach Richie Riley. The Jags had six players finish with double-figures in scoring for the first time since December 2020 against Flager.

This is the eighth matchup between South Alabama and Alabama A&M. The Jags lead the series 6-1 and hold a 6-0 record over the Bulldogs at home.

About Alabama A&M (1-10)

  • Alabama A&M is in 10th place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs are currently on a five-game losing streak, and their lone win came against Tennessee State in a tight 85-83 home contest. 

  • A&M has faced a tough non-conference schedule, taking on three SEC teams, one C-USA opponent, and one ACC team. 

  •  Dailin Smith paces Alabama A&M, averaging 14.9 points and 3.7 boards.

  • South has six players finish with double figures in scoring for the first time since December 2020 against Flager. Gaiter led all scorers with 20 points, Samuel Tabe set a new season-high for the second week in a row with 19 points, Julian Margrave hit four three-pointers to earn 12 points, Marcus Millender scored 12 points, Ethan Kizer set a new career-high with 11 points, and Thomas Howell totaled 10 points. 

  • Gaiter continues to be a force for the Jaguars. He has scored double-figures in nine games this season and earned his third 20-point game against Spring Hill. He also ranks first in the Sun Belt Conference in minutes per game (34.6), fifth in free throw percentage (82.2), and sixth in field goal percentage (50.8). 

  • Millender ranks third in the Sun Belt in total assists with 45. The Jaguars are 5-1 when Millender dishes out four assists or more in a game. 

  • Julian Margrave has been lights out from behind the arc this season. Margrave is fifth in the conference in total three-pointers with 19.

  • South ranks third in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage, shooting 73.6 percent on the season. Against Maryland, South shot 100 percent from the free throw line for the first time since January of 2022. 

  • The Jaguars are 4-2 at home and 2-3 on the road this season. 

  • South Alabama has totaled two double-doubles so far this season. Marcus Millender logged 23 points and ten assists against Nicholls, finishing one rebound shy of a triple-double, grabbing nine rebounds. Howell secured his first double-double in a Jaguar uniform and the sixth in his career against Denver, scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds.
