Jaguars open Sun Belt Tournament play against Texas State

MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 1 seed South Alabama Jaguars open play at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 4 p.m., taking on the No. 8 seed Texas State Bobcats.
 
South got a first-round bye, while Texas State played Monday night, defeating Louisiana 2-1.
 
The Jaguars earned the number one seed in the tournament, following an 8-0-2 league record and 26 conference points, outscoring opponents 22-4. South finished the regular season 15-0-3 ending the regular season undefeated for the first time in program history.
 
South Alabama remained in the rankings, coming in at #18 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and #25 in the latest NCAA RPI.
 
The match will be streamed on ESPN+ and Live Stats will be available.

South Alabama Notes
  • Graduate forward Gabby Hollar was named Sun Belt Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Hollar is joined by graduate defender Abby Jacobs, the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Richard Moodie also earned some recognition, earning the honor of Coach of the Year.
  • It is the third year in a row a Jaguar has been named Player of the Year, Offensive of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, and the second time the same player has earned all three honors.
  • Hollar and Jacobs were also named First-Team All-Conference and were joined by graduate midfielder Gracie Wilson. Five Jags were named Second-Team All-Conference: forwards Jasmine Greene and Chiara Singarella, midfielder Irene Campo, defender Amber Fortenberry and goalkeeper Jaidy Gutierrez Campos.
  • South Alabama is one of 4 teams still undefeated on the season with a 15-0-3 recorded. South is ranked 3rd in the nation in win-loss percentage (.917).
  • The 2023 South Alabama team led the Sun Belt in 11 categories, including total goals (50), scoring offense (2.78), total points (146), goal differential (43), GAA (.39), and shots on goal per game (8.28).
  • The Jags also finished the regular season ranked 7th in the nation in total goals, 2nd in GAA, 9th in points per game (8.11), 9th in scoring offense and 2nd in goal differential.
  • Graduate student Gracie Wilson played in her 100th career match vs Texas State, making her one of just two players to reach the 100 mark. In the match vs Arkansas State, she recorded her 101st appearance, making her the new program leader for career appearances.
  • Gabby Hollar leads the Jags with 12 goals on the year.
  • With an assist in South Alabama's 5-0 win over Louisiana, Gracie Wilson became the new program leader for career assists with 31. Wilson is tied for second on the team this season for assists with five.
  • South Alabama has had 13 different Jags score this season, with nine Jaguars scoring multiple goals on the season.
 
Texas State Notes
  • Texas State won their opening game of the tournament, defeating Louisiana 2-1.
  • They are now 9-6-4 on the year.
  • Senior forward Olivia Wright leads the team in goals with seven on the year, four of them coming in conference play.
  • Texas State has played three keepers this year, with the main starter being Caitlyn Draper, who has recorded five shutouts this season.
  • Texas State is averaging 1.63 goals per game.
 
Series History vs. Texas State
  • South Alabama is 9-1-2 all-time vs the Bobcats of Texas State, with the last meeting being a South Alabama 4-0 win over Texas State in Mobile on Oct 22.  The lone loss in the series came in 2018 when Texas State beat South 1-0 in Mobile.
