SUN BELT CONFERENCE WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT BRACKET RELEASED

NEW ORLEANS – Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Sun Belt Conference released the bracket for the 2020 women's basketball championship.

The University of South Alabama earned the sixth seed after finishing 9-9 in league action and will open play in the event Tuesday when it faces seventh-seeded Arkansas State at 8:30 p.m. (CDT) at UTA's College Park Center.  The winner of the contest will advance to take on either the host Lady Mavericks — the third seed in the tournament — or No. 10 seed Texas State at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The school that claims the two-day, four-team pod will move on to New Orleans, where it will play second-seeded Coastal Carolina in the semifinals at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Troy is the top seed in the tournament, which includes 10 of the conference's 12 programs.  The winner of the championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The Jaguars and Red Wolves split a pair of meetings during the regular season, with each winning on their home court.  South defeated A-State 87-71 on Feb. 20 in Mobile, but fell 86-80 on Thursday in the rematch in Jonesboro.

Last season, the Jags won four games in five days to make their first appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament championship game since 1989.
