LITTLEFORD, GUDMUNDSDOTTIR NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Date: 10/28

NEW ORLEANS – For the second time under Head Coach Richard Moodie, the University of South Alabama soccer team swept the player of the week awards. Kailey Littleford took the offensive award while Anita Gudmundsdottir claimed the defensive honors. This was the first time two freshmen from the same school won the award in the same week in the history of the Sun Belt.

They were the third and fourth players to win the distinction for USA this season while also being the first time either of the pair was nominated. It was the first time a freshman from USA was honored since Brenna McPartlan earned the award on Oct. 16, 2018.

Littleford was key in both games against this weekend, as she played senior Deanna Green into the open field down the right channel before Green's cross was knocked in for the only goal in Friday night's match with Georgia Southern. Sunday, the right winger scored twice against Georgia State with the first being counted as the game-winning goal. For the first goal, after relentless defensive pressure from freshman Morgan White created a turnover in possession, senior Ana Helmert's through ball was paced perfectly for Littleford to run onto and knock in with a side-footed shot in the lower left corner.

Gudmundsdottir kept two clean sheets over the weekend and is currently on a 277-minute shutout streak. The freshman out of Kópavogur, Iceland made a highlight save on Friday night by tipping a free kick over the crossbar with 75 seconds left in the match. Georgia Southern's Marcela Montoya took a shot from about 24 yards away getting the free kick over the wall and dipping toward the right upper 90 until Gudmundsdottir was able to push the ball over with her right hand keeping South at a one-goal advantage and the Eagles scoreless. On Sunday, not only did the keeper maintain a shutout but her distribution led to Littleford's second goal.
