MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama soccer head coach
Richard Moodie announced Thursday six additional signees for the 2019 season.
Joining the program are:
Fanney Einarsdóttir,
Leandra Flury,
Tabea Griss,
Chloe McGlade,
Athanasia Moraitou and
Gracie Wilson.
"For us it was clear to see after the season what we would need," Moodie said. "I thought we were a team that created a lot of chances but we lacked that conversion in the final third so that was a focal point for us, in addition to replacing Hannah Godfrey. The group as a whole is exciting; they're well-decorated in terms of their soccer careers and a lot of them come with experience in the fact that they're transfers. They're a diverse group and one we're excited to coach."
Fanney Einarsdóttir – Forward
Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands
Akranes, Iceland
Played for club team ÍA for 10 years before joining Valur in 2018… Capped at the U-17 and U-19 level for Iceland… Hit the back of the net in each of the 2018 and 2019 UEFA U-19 Championships in 12 total appearances.
Moodie on Einarsdóttir: "Fanney is playing in the top level in Iceland and also played for the U-19 national team. She's in that process of being considered for the senior national team. She's left-footed, can play anywhere in the top five and is a goal scorer. She's clinical in front of goal, creates chances and is exciting to watch. She's someone that I think will have a big impact as a freshman."
Leandra Flury – Defender
Berufsmaturitätsschule Zürich
Zurich, Switzerland
Played nine seasons for FC Zurich Women… Started at FC Niederweningen in 2004 and played for both boys and girls teams before joining FC Zurich in 2010… Member of U-13 and U-15 pre-national teams.
Moodie on Flury: "Leandra is a freshman but comes in a little older due to the education system in Switzerland. She plays in the highest level in Switzerland, which is one of the best levels in the world right now. She's an exciting player and tough as nails, and had a lot of options in the Power 5 but chose to come to South Alabama. She's a forward-thinking player, which is something we missed in our fullbacks last year. "
Tabea Griss – Midfielder
Ambrosius Blarer Gymnasium
Gaienhofen, Germany
Spent seven seasons with Hegauer FV in Engen, Germany… Three-time futsal state champion… Won four state cup titles… Led Hegauer to Oberliga championship and promotion to Regionalliga… Named to all-state team.
Moodie on Griss: "We had the luxury of watching her play in Germany and plays at a really good level there. She's a young lady that's also left-footed and a ball-winner in the middle of the park – that was something I felt needed to be addressed this year. She comes to us with a lot of experience and maturity, and is someone that is not scared of a challenge. You really need that player in the middle of the park that would be that midfield general. She's very creative and can play multiple positions."
Chloe McGlade – Forward
Loreto Grammar School
County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Member of Sion Swifts Ladies in County Tyrone from 2016-19… Finished as league runners up in 2017 and won Irish Cup that same year.
Moodie on McGlade: "Chloe comes to us from a high level in Northern Ireland. As a coach, I've had a conveyer belt of players from Northern Ireland, dating back to my previous school. I had two players that were all-Americans from that same line of players. Chloe fits the athleticism of the Division I game, but in terms of football, she's a dominant force. She can play out wide or as a center forward, she's fast and strong, and clinical. She gives us a little more maturity in that front five. She can help fill the void of what we were missing from Kory Dixon last year and can come in right away and compete for a starting spot."
Athanasia Moraitou – Midfielder
Schickhardt-Gymnasium
Waiblingen, Germany
Made 67 appearances over four seasons with Sindelfingen and 31 appearances over two seasons with Cloppenburg in the 2. Bundesliga Women… Scored 14 goals with Sindelfingen and one with Cloppenburg… Capped at the U-17, U-19 and senior level for Greece… Scored a goal for the U-19s in the UEFA Women's Championship in 2015 and 2016, then made a combined 10 appearances for the senior team in the qualifiers for the 2017 UEFA Women's Championship and 2019 Women's World Cup
Moodie on Moraitou: "Athanasia has played for her national team in World Cup and European qualifiers, and has played at the highest standard against the world's best players. For us, she's going to be an impact player in the midfield. She's left-footed, which gives us an abundance of those after not having enough last year. She has so many dimensions to her game. She can work hard and put in a tackle with the best of them, but when she's on the ball, the creativity she shows is one of the most exciting things about her."
Gracie Wilson – Midfielder
Heritage High School
Conyers, Ga.
Earned four varsity letters in soccer, two in cross country and one each and track and softball… Also served two years as wrestling manager… Started four seasons on varsity team and served two seasons as captain… Named attacker of the year three times… Scored 56 goals with 42 assists in her career… Played one season with club team Concorde Fire… Also spent time with Tophat Soccer Club, where they finished third at nationals, won a Disney championship and finished runner up, and was a WAGS champion.
Moodie on Wilson: "Gracie is our diamond in the rough. She played for one of the top clubs in America – Tophat – and played on that team when they were in the top five in the country. She kind of fell in and out of soccer, but showed up at an ID camp one summer and is a phenomenal talent. She reminds me a lot of Danielle Henley. She can strike a ball with both feet, tough in the air, strong on the tackle and very creative with the ball at her feet. She's an exceptional soccer player and a really good individual. I think she can be someone in the mix for big minutes as a freshman and will catch a lot of people by surprise."
