NEW ORLEANS, La. - Savannah Jones has been named the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, Feb. 18. This is the second time in the last three weeks that Jones has received the award and fifth time this season that a University of South Alabama women's basketball player has been honored by the Sun Belt.
Jones averaged 23 points and eight rebounds per game, while shooting 55 percent from behind the arc, in South Alabama's two wins at home this week. On Thursday night against Georgia Southern, Jones went for a game-high 28 points, shooting 7-for-11 (.636) from deep, and grabbed eight rebounds in the 73-60 victory. Jones' seven three-pointers tied a career-high, previously set this season at Coastal Carolina.
Jones followed that performance up with an 18 point day in a three point Jags win over Georgia State on Saturday afternoon. After being held to just two points in the first half vs. the Panthers, Jones shot 4-of-7 from three in the second half to help the Jags make up a nine-point deficit at the break and complete the comeback.
Jones, a sophomore guard from Ocean Springs, Miss., leads the Jaguars in scoring at 15.4 points per game. Jones sits at the top of Sun Belt with a .461 three-point field-goal percentage and, as of games played through Feb. 15, ranks ninth in the NCAA.
This is the fifth time a member of the Jaguars women's basketball team has been honored with the weekly award by the Sun Belt. Jones twice and Antoinette Lewis three times. That mark eclipses the total set by the 1995-96 team, which had four players receive it.
