2019 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List

GREENEVILLE, N.C. – University of South Alabama right-hander Zach Greene was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2019 Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, awarded to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I, as announced by the organization Monday.

Greene is one of 75 student-athletes, and just one of two Sun Belt Conference pitchers (Matt Eardensohn, Coastal Carolina), to be named to the list.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native finished tied for 10th in the Sun Belt in strikeouts (80) and saves (5) last season. He ranked 13th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (12.63), and 23rd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.15) in 2018. Greene was selected in the 15th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the Miami Marlins.

In 11 relief appearances in Sun Belt games last season, Greene recorded three saves and struck out 35 batters while issuing just four walks in 25 2/3 innings pitched. In 23 total appearances last year, two of which were starts, he finished 2-4 with five saves and a 3.79 ERA. He struck out 80 batters against 13 walks in 57 innings pitched.

Florida right-hander Michael Byrne earned the 2018 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.
