JAG BASEBALL TO OPEN THREE-GAME SET AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN



MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will travel to Statesboro, Ga., for a three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend series with Georgia Southern.

The series will open at 5 p.m. (CT) Friday at J.I. Clements Stadium, followed by game two Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT). The series finale is scheduled for a noon (CT) first pitch Sunday.

All three games will be streamed live on ESPN3, while each game will also be broadcast live on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile and can be accessed via the iHeartRadio app. Live stats will be available at USAJaguars.com, and in-game updates are provided at Twitter.com/SouthALBaseball.

USA (29-17, 14-7 SBC) will send right-hander Kevin Hill (7-0) to the mound in the series opener. Hill was named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, a Louisville Slugger Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and the SBC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a one-hit shutout in last weekend's series-opening win over Georgia State. GSU will counter with left-hander Evan Challenger (5-0) who carries a 1.06 ERA with 50 strikeouts against 14 walks in 59 1/3 innings pitched.

Jaguar right-hander Austin Bembnowski (2-3) will get the start in game two for USA, while the Eagles will send right-hander Tripp Sheppard (4-2) to the mound for his 10th start of the season. USA southpaw Jared Gates (4-2) will make his 11th start of the year in the series finale, and GSU will start left-hander Connor Simmons (2-4).

USA enters the weekend with a four-game SBC winning streak, and has won six of its last seven conference contests after sweeping league leader Georgia State last weekend at Stanky Field. The Jaguars lead the SBC in batting average (.280), on-base percentage (.377), hits (449), triples (15) and walks (211), and are tied for the league lead in sacrifice flies (23).

The USA pitching staff leads the Sun Belt in ERA (3.29) and strikeouts (375), and the Jaguars rank second in the league with a .975 fielding percentage.

Hill leads the SBC with 66 strikeouts, and ranks second in ERA (2.22) behind Challenger (1.06). Cole Billingsley ranks second in the conference with 20 stolen bases, and is tied for second in triples (4). Adam Ballew enters the weekend ranked second in the league with five sacrifice flies.

GSU (27-18, 16-8 SBC) has won three of its last four games after taking two of three from Louisiana-Monroe last weekend in Statesboro, and defeating Jacksonville 5-3 Tuesday. The Eagles rank third in the SBC in batting average (.276) and ERA (3.86).
