MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball program had two more individuals selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday, with four Jaguars chosen by teams during the 40 rounds of the event the last three days.
The Colorado Rockies picked right-handed pitcher Dylan Stamey with third pick of 14th round (409th overall), while outfielder Nolan Earley was taken in the 22nd round (663rd overall) by the Chicago White Sox. The two joined Jordan Patterson (Colorado, fourth round) and Kyle Bartsch (Kansas City Royals, seventh round), who were chosen on the second day of the draft.
It marks the first time since 2009 that four Jags have been selected in the draft, while the last time three or more USA players were selected in the first 15 rounds was 2006.
In his first season with the program, Stamey made 24 appearances out of the bullpen, going 5-2 with a 2.17 earned-run average and four saves. He struck out 62 batters and walked only nine, ranking second on the team in strikeouts despite throwing just 37.1 innings. Opponents batted .209 against the junior from Theodore, Ala.
A senior last year, Earley — who hails from Anderson, Ind. — led the Jaguars with 59 runs batted in while hitting .323 with 19 doubles and 50 runs scored. He was second on the squad with 76 base hits, and he had a .411 on-base percentage after walking 36 times. Earley was fourth in the Sun Belt Conference rankings in RBI and also among the top 10 in doubles.
After advancing to an NCAA Regional for the first time seven years, USA concluded the season 43-20 overall and 20-10 in the Sun Belt, earning a share of the league crown.
