MOBILE, Ala. – Six University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes will compete in summer leagues over the next couple of months, highlighted by Jordan Patterson and J.T. Files who will begin play in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) this evening.
Patterson, a second-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection this past season, will join the Bourne Braves – the 2009 CCBL champions – while Files will compete against Patterson as a member of the Brewster Whitecaps.
Bourne had 11 players from its 2010 roster selected in the first 10 rounds of last year’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Its alumni who have moved on to MLB include Ron Villone, Mark Kotsay, Mark DeRosa, Brandon Inge, Kevin Youkilis and Joe Blanton among others.
Adam Lind (2003) and Joel Collins (2005-06) both played in the CCBL with the Wareham Gatemen.
Nolan Earley returned to the Prospect League for the third consecutive year, and is spending his second consecutive season with the Richmond RiverRats. Earley is tied for the league lead in hits (25), tied for second in doubles (5), ranks third in batting average (.463), tied for third in RBI (14) and tied for fourth in walks (12).
Earley has recorded a hit in all 10 games he has played this summer, and has recorded multiple hits in six of those contests. He has driven in a run in five games, and has three multiple-RBI games thus far.
Whitt Dorsey is playing with the East Texas Pumpjacks of the Texas Collegiate League, and currently ranks second in the league in hitting with a .417 average. He has hit safely in six of seven games played, and has recorded multiple hits in two of those contests.
Robby Campbell is off to a hot start with the Luray Wranglers of the Valley Baseball League. Through 10 games, Campbell leads the team in batting average (.381), runs scored (7), hits (16), doubles (6) and total bases (25). He has added a home run and four RBI, and has posted a .595 slugging percentage while reaching base at a .422 clip.
Kevin Knapp is playing with the Leesburg Lightning of the Florida Collegiate Summer League, and is hitting .286 through just two games.
