Guerin Multi-HR Game, Gonzalez CG Support Jags Surge Past ODU on Sunday in Run-Rule Fashion

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (18-10, 5-4 SBC) powered past Old Dominion (13-14, 3-6 SBC) in run-rule fashion, sparked by Blake Guerin's two-homer game and the first Jaguar seven inning complete game since 2023 from Daniel Gonzalez who struck out nine Monarchs.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Jaguar offense got started in the second inning when it jumped for four runs on six hits including three doubles. Nate Wood tagged the first double who later scored thanks to a Mike Young two-RBI single. Ethan Melton doubled to left field which set up a Brennon Wright RBI, followed by a hammered double to right field off the bat of Duncan Mathews to cap off the four-spot.
  • First baseman Blake Guerin crushed his first homer of the afternoon that traveled 410 ft. and left the bat at 109 MPH for a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Jaguar lead to five.
  • Nate Wood's second double of the day scored a run and set-up two runners in scoring position when Guerin advanced to third on the knock with one away. Mike Young would plate Guerin on a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-out RBI single off the bat of Rett Johnson who had a three-hit game of his own.
  • The lone run Jaguar starter Daniel Gonzalez would allow this afternoon came in the fifth inning on a Monarch RBI double. Gonzalez went on to throw the first Jaguar seven inning complete game since 2023 and struck out nine.
  • The offense struck for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Stewart Puckett and Blake Guerin back-to-back homers. It would be Puckett's fourth of the year in two-run fashion to the opposite field, and Guerin's team-leading 10th of the season and 20th of his NCAA career.
  • Gonzalez sat the Monarchs down in order in the seventh to secure the run-rule and series victory over Old Dominion.

KEY STATS
  • Seven Jaguars contributed for RBI in the run-rule victory, with eight starters recording hits. Mike Young led the RBI category with three, on a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
  • Blake Guerin tagged the first Jaguar multi-HR game since 2024, when he launched a season-high two-homers in a 4-4 afternoon to total his 20th career homer and 10th of the season.
  • Stewart Puckett hit an opposite field, two-run shot for his fourth of the year.
  • Rett Johnson tallied his second multi-hit game of the series when he recorded three hits and two-RBI in the victory.
  • Nate Wood logged two doubles and a single in his three-hit effort at the dish alongside an RBI.
  • Daniel Gonzalez (W, 3-2) threw the first Jaguar seven-inning complete game since 2023 and earned his third win of the season in the following line: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K across 110 total pitches.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Gonz (Daniel Gonzalez) was fantastic today. Six out of the seven lead off outs. Gonz just pitches, and that's what he did today.

We had seven different guys with RBIs in the lineup and I told the guys: when they compete to the best of their ability, this is a version of who they can be. It's all about action and reaction. Yesterday was the action, today was the reaction. We'd love to put it together three times in a weekend, but really proud of their effort today."

ON DECK
The Jags are slated for a Tuesday night midweek contest with New Orleans at Stanky Field (March 31), first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (CT).
