NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama right-hander Dustin Crenshaw was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference office.
Crenshaw tossed a complete-game shutout to lead South Alabama to a series-clinching win over Western Kentucky Saturday afternnon at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky., yielding just six hits while striking out five and issuing one walk. He retired 10 consecutive batters after allowing a single in the third inning, and retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. He limited the Sun Belt’s second-ranked offense to a .188 bating average, en route to recording his third complete game and second shutout of the season.
Crenshaw (7-1) ranks third in the SBC in innings pitched (93.1), is tied for third in walks allowed (11) and tied for the fifth in wins with seven. He leads the Jaguars with two shutouts this season, and shares the team lead in wins and complete games (3).
Monday’s announcement marked the second time this season that a South Alabama pitcher received the honor, and marked the first time in his career that Crenshaw received the honor.
“Dustin (Crenshaw) is certainly deserving of this honor,” South Alabama head coach Steve Kittrell said. “He has been outstanding all season, and gave a tremendous effort in a game when we really needed it at Western Kentucky on Saturday. He has been a consistent performer for us all year, and gives you a chance to win every time he takes the mound.”
