MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team continued fall practice with four intrasquad games last week at Stanky Field. The Gray team took two games, while the Blue earned one win and one game ended in a tie.
A few highlights from those intrasquads are below.
Fri., Oct. 14 – Gray 4, Blue 3
The Gray team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 4-3 win over the Blue team Friday afternoon at Stanky Field.
Gray jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on an RBI groundout by Whitt Dorsey in the first inning and a Blue team error in the second.
The Blue answered to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kevin Knapp and a Gray team error, and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Logan Kirkland.
The Gray then pushed across the game’s final runs in the bottom-half of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Colin Bray and a Blue team error.
Bray went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Dorsey went 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Gray team at the plate. Hunt Griffith and Harold Collins added one hit apiece.
Austin Curtis went 2-for-2 to lead the Blue team offensively. Logan Kirkland had one hit and drove in a run, and Dustin Dalken and Nick Zaharion had one hit each.
James Traylor tossed three shutout innings for the Gray team, allowing just two hits while striking out one. Gray reliever Jaime Dennis pitched one scorless inning.
Chase Jordan tossed one scoreless inning in relief for the Blue team, and allowed only one hit.
Sat., Oct. 15 – Blue 4, Gray 4
The Blue team scored two runs in the final inning to tie the game 4-4 before it was called.
Zaharion delivered a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning to knot the score. The Blue squad pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Zaharion and a Gray team error. But the Gray team pitching staff answered with four consecutive hitless innings and took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Following a leadoff single by Jordan Patterson and walk by Nolan Earley, Matt Wojciechowski delivered a two-run single that doubled the Gray lead.
In the top of the sixth, Kirkland reached on a fielder’s choice before Dalken singled ahead of Zaharion.
Anthony Izzio pitched three shutout innings, and did not allow a hit while striking out one. Dennis tossed one shutout inning for the Blue team and struck out two.
Zaharion went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Blue team at the plate, and Dalken went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Patterson went 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base, and Hook went 2-for-2 with a double to lead the Gray team. Wojciechowski added a hit and two RBI.
Sun., Oct. 16 – Gray 1, Blue 0
Kyle Bartsch and Jarrett Bailey combined for a one-hit shutout to lead the Gray team to a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon.
Bartsch went three innings and allowed just one hit with one strikeout, while Bailey tossed one relief inning. Bartsch did not surrender a hit after allowing a leadoff single to Campbell to open the game.
The Gray team scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the second inning when Zaharion singled to lead off the inning, and later scored on a Blue team error.
The Blue pitching trio of Payton Gardner, Ryan Wysocki and A.J. Braun combined to allow one unearned run on two hits. Braun and Wysocki pitched one shutout inning each.
Zaharion went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Collins added one hit to lead the Gray team. Campbell had the Blue team’s only hit.
Tue., Oct. 18 – Blue 4, Gray 0
Cole Jarman blasted a three-run home run, and the Blue pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon at Stanky Field.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Jarman lifted a three-run homer over the right-field wall to give the Blue team a 4-0 lead heading into the game’s final half-inning.
The Blue scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dalken in the top of the third inning.
Izzio, Traylor, Alex Blodgett and Dennis held the Gray hitters to just one hit – a single by Bray in the bottom of the fourth.
Andrew Fonzi and Phillip Byrd each pitched scoreless innings for the Gray team, and Braun allowed one unearned run on one hit in his one inning of work.
Drew Cofield went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Jarman went 1-for-2 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Blue team at the plate.
Bray collected the Gray team’s lone hit of the contest.
South Alabama will intrasquad every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during fall practice. The Jaguars will hold their next intrasquad at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at Stanky Field.
