South Alabama to Host ULM in SBC Home Opener

MOBILE, Ala. - The South Alabama (14-7, 1-2 SBC) Sun Belt Conference opener is set to host ULM (13-9, 3-0 SBC) with Friday night's series opener, scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The series continues on Saturday with first pitch at 2:00 p.m., while Sunday's series finale is slated for 1:00 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
The Jaguars have dominated their seventeenth most common opponent in program history in the Warhawks. South Alabama has not lost a series to ULM since 2007, and holds a 35-15 record since then, although the most recent sweep came in 2022. In 63 total games between the SBC foes, the Jaguars lead the all-time series a convincing 45-18. The longest Jaguar win streak was eight games, spanning from April 2, 2016 - March 17, 2018. The most recent meeting came in Monroe as the regular season series finale in 2025 where the Jaguars took the Saturday and Sunday games to clinch the series after dropping the Friday night contest. In the last 10 match-ups, the Jags lead 7-3.

SCOUTING THE WARHAWKS
The Warhawks enter the series at South Alabama swinging the bats very well. The offense ranks first in the Sun Belt in the following categories: Batting average (.335), hits (256), on-base percentage (.442), and runs scored (215). On a five-game win streak, ULM is coming off a sweep in the SBC opener vs. Texas State after avoiding a sweep the previous Sunday at UT Arlington. The sweep over Texas State in the SBC opener marked its second sweep of the season (Western Illinois), and its first conference sweep since Arkansas State in the 2024 season. A 17-12 victory over UNO on Wednesday night brings the Warhawks to Stanky Field. The Jaguars and the Warhawks have just one similar opponent in Southeastern Louisiana, where the Jags won both and ULM had dropped both against SLU. The Ragin' Cajuns are set to host ULM in the series to follow the Jags.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Jaguars are coming off an electric midweek victory over Alabama when it fired a late game comeback to secure the win, and are looking to ride the momentum into the weekend vs. ULM.
  • Brennon Wright has currently ranked 2nd in the SBC in batting average (.419), 3rd in the SBC in hits (31), and still leads the conference in OBP (.552).
  • The familiar face in Mitchell Heer has been a tone setter as the Friday night arm thus far for the Jaguars. It is no mistake the Jaguars are 5-0 to start the season on Friday nights when No. 13 is on the hill. Heer has a team-leading three Quality Starts in just five appearances, alongside a perfect 3-0 record with a 3.81 ERA.
  • Daniel Gonzalez will face his former club when he takes the rubber on Sunday afternoon. He's been a serious competitor with a 3.00 ERA (leads starters above 2 starts) and four of five starts have been 5.0+ IP.
  • Southpaw Jaxon Shineflew tacked on another 5.2 scoreless innings over the weekend at Louisiana to push his scoreless streak to 18.2 innings consecutively.
  • Jaguar clean up hitter and third baseman Stewart Puckett has been key both with the bat and with the glove. He is 8 for his last 18 and 5 for his last 8 with two hits on Sunday at UL (3/15) and three hits vs. Alabama, including a two-out bases loaded single to tie the game in the 7th.
