Notes You Need to Know
-
After powering South Alabama to a 2–0 road swing with two dominant performances, Chaze Harris has been named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Harris averaged 28.0 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the field and converting 20 free throws on the week, leading the Jaguars to wins over Southern Miss and Arkansas State.
-
Chaze Harris leads the Sun Belt in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game overall and 22.4 points in conference play. He ranks 11th nationally in free throws attempted (205) and 15th in field goals made, while sitting among the Top 40 in scoring. Harris scored 25+ points in each of the last three games and poured in 28 points at Marshall to surpass 2,000 career points across his time with the Jags, and NAIA stops at Life and Shawnee State.
-
South Alabama delivered one of its most improbable comebacks of the season Saturday, erasing an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Arkansas State,92–88 in overtime. With seven seconds remaining in regulation and trailing by three, Chaze Harris went the length of the court and drilled a running, off-balance three-pointer through contact, completing the four-point play to tie the game and force overtime.
-
In the extra period, South Alabama capitalized at the free-throw line and came up with key defensive stops to secure the 92–88 victory, finishing the game on a 40–18 surge over the final 7:45 of regulation and overtime combined. The win marked the fourth time this season the Jaguars have rallied from a deficit of 14 points or more to earn a victory.
-
Richie Riley's teams have been dominant in the month of February since he took the reins of the program in 2018–19. Riley owns a 43–20 record in February, and the Jaguars won seven of their final nine games to close the regular season a year ago.
-
With four games remaining in the regular season, South Alabama men's basketball is set to close out the year with four straight home games at the Mitchell Center. The Jags host Texas State tonight before taking on rival Troy at home on Saturday, Feb. 21. South Alabama wraps up the final week of Sun Belt regular-season play with ULM on Feb. 25 before honoring five seniors — Chaze Harris, JJ Wheat, Randy Brady, Maxwell Land, and Hantz Louis-Jeune — against Southern Miss on Feb. 27.
- With the victory over Arkansas State, Head Coach Richie Riley secured his 150th career win at South Alabama, becoming just the third head coach in program history to reach the milestone. Riley now ranks third on the Jaguars' all-time wins list, trailing only Ronnie Arrow (211) and Cliff Ellis (171). The achievement highlights one of the most successful sustained stretches in modern program history, as the Jaguars continue to compete among the Sun Belt's top programs under Riley's leadership.
