Men's Tennis Tops Alabama State to Finish Blue Gray Classic

MONTGOMERY – The South Alabama men's tennis team capped off the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a thrilling win over Alabama State in Montgomery.

"It was a good weekend with tough competition," said head coach Nick Brochu. "I thought we won some highly contested matches in a span of 48 hours while battling the weather conditions. I thought our guys competed well and are obviously tired right now after that push at the end. I'm very proud of them, happy of the way they competed and how hard we pushed ourselves. I'm really hopefully that we carry this into the ITA Regionals next weekend."

The Jaguars opened play on Friday at Lagoon Park against Columbia. Harold van Raemdonck picked up a singles win in that dual match, while Victor Frumholz nearly knocked off Andrew Ena in three sets. The Jags' duo of Jules Caby and Adam Bouyacoub narrowly fell 6-4 in doubles.

Bouyacoub had to retire for the weekend during the second set of his singles match. Columbia went on to win 5-1. That pitted the Jags against a dual team of Georgia Tech and Memphis, while an Alabama State player filled in for the shorthanded Jags.

Both Frumholz and Caby picked up points for South Alabama in the second match, both dominating in straight sets. Meanwhile, van Raemdonck won the first set of his singles match before losing in three sets. The Jags fell 4-2 after the Alabama State individual lost in straight sets.

Saturday's final match was against Alabama State, which the Jags went on to win 3-2 in dramatic fashion. The Hornets picked a point in doubles after knocking off Caby and Frumholz in a tiebreaker set. However, both made up for it by winning their singles matches. Van Raemdonck cruised in straight sets, while Caby went the distance in a three-set winner. Alabama State forced a tiebreaker doubles match after Frumholz fell in straight sets.

In the tiebreaker match, Caby and van Raemdonck cruised toa 10-5 win to give the Jags a 3-2 win. Columbia went on to win the team title over Texas Tech, 4-1.

South Alabama will next play in the ITA Regionals in Auburn on Oct. 8-12.
