Jags Enjoy Solid Showing at ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – Jules Caby won three individual matches and South Alabama men's tennis placed three into the main draw at the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn.

"The regional was really strong, and I think in the long term it will make us more physical as a team," said head coach Nick Brochu. "It's over five days and we saw some very good performances from some of the guys, so I'm very happy with our results. We had Jules and Victor passing the qualifying rounds to join Harold in the main draw. We had three Jags represented in that draw against several P4 programs."

Caby started his weekend with a two-set sweep of Loris Gueli and then went the distance in a three-set win against Santiago Padilla Cote in his first main draw match. That win advanced him to a match against Pietro Pampanin, the No. 11 seed in the tournament.

Caby dominated the first set, then won a tiebreaker in the second set to sweep the Ole Miss individual player and punch his ticket into the round of 16. Caby eventually fell in that round in straight sets to Marko Milosavjevic, who ended up losing in the quarterfinals.

"Jules played amazing," Brochu said. "I mean, he really stepped up his game and beat a strong player from Tulane that he lost to about three weeks ago. In the second round, he beat a very strong Ole Miss player as well, and then, you know, just kind of ran out of steam in the next round, but he fought so hard and I'm very proud of him."

Victor Frumholz also advanced to the main draw, beating Illie Cazac and Jip Landerhuizen in the qualifying draw. Frumholz won the first match in straight sets and then won his second in three sets, losing the first set before winning the final two. Frumholz had his run in the main draw end against No. 6 Raphael Vaksmann, who won 7-5, 6-3.

"Victor also passed the qualies and won two big matches in those rounds," Brochu said. He " saved match points in the first round, so he showed a lot of resilience, and then got to the main draw and played on of the favorites. We had some great results that went into doubles and we played strong."

Harold van Raemdonck automatically advanced into the main draw and won his first match, 6-3, 2-6, 3-0 (ret.), against Stefan Vedovelli, who had to withdraw due to injury while van Raemdonck was leading. Van Raemdonck then lost in the next round to Alec Gaudin in straight sets.

Deren Yigin avenged a first-round loss as he picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jose Ignacio in the consolation bracket. Jonathan Kneer also competed in the qualifying and consolation draw and dropped a trio of tightly contested matches.

In doubles action, both Jaguar pairings won their first match in the main draw. Van Raemdonck and Frumholz cruised to an 8-3 win before falling in the next round, 8-5. Yigin and Caby also dominated their match with an 8-2 win but fell 8-6 to Jake Kennedy and Joseph Phillips of Auburn.

"We lost two very, very close matches and I liked what I saw," Brochu said. "Those pairs are clicking better and the chemistry is there. Overall, I'm very happy with the way we competed. I'm very happy with the results and we were right there in the matches we lost." ?

South Alabama will play in the Country Club of Birmingham Invitational Oct. 23-25, which is being held in Birmingham.
