BIRMINGHAM – South Alabama men's tennis picked up nine wins at the Country Club of Birmingham Invitational, while Harold van Raemdonck and Victor Frumholz won the Red Doubles bracket.
 
"This was a great tournament as it was the last one for some of the guys," said head coach Nick Broschu. "I thought we finished a physically demanding tournament very well. We're tired but I was proud of how the guys pushed through it and fought to the end. It was on a clay court, so we had to adjust to that and I thought they made that adjustment with no problem."
 
The doubles duo won 6-2 over a Jacksonville State pair and won the bracket championship 6-4 against Southern Miss' duo. Deren Yigin and Jonathan Kneer dropped their first match before winning 6-3 against a North Alabama duo.
 
In singles play, Yigin made a run to the semifinals in the Bulldog bracket with early wins over Whitman Davis from North Alabama and Salas Pages from East Tennessee State. Yigin dropped a three-set match to Jay Temming before winning his consolation match in three sets.
 
In the Blue bracket, van Raemdonck opened with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over Asaf Friedler from Tulane. He dropped the next match but rattled off back-to-back wins in the consolation rounds.
 
The Jags will wrap up fall play with the ITA Sectionals and Battle at the Beach on Nov. 5-6.
