MOBILE, Ala. - The Jaguars (15-19) will face the Alabama State Hornets (18-19) for the second time this season.
South Alabama is set to play their second game in Montgomery this season. The first was a neutral site game against No. 11 Auburn that ended in a 13-5 Tigers victory. USA is coming off a weekend trip to Arkansas State, where the Jags lost the series on a rubber match after taking Saturday, 3-2.
SERIES HISTORY
South Alabama holds the all-time record over ASU, 23-4, with a 9-2 win over the Hornets back in February. Last season, the record between the two programs was split, with the home team taking the win in each game. Alabama State won in seven innings last May, 12-2, and South won on a walk-off in Mobile, 10-9 during the first clash in March. Over the last five seasons, South has won seven of the last nine games.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
With an 18-19 record, Alabama State has played well in conference, winning three of their four conference series. 1-9 in midweek matchups, the Hornets have struggled against a strong non-conference. ASU is 0-3 against Sun Belt competition, with the other two losses coming by a midweek home-and-home against Georgia State.
HOME RUNS FOR EVERYONE
In South Alabama's series victory over Georgia Southern, the Jags struck seven home runs by five different players in the first two games.
Ethan Melton broke off his first homer of the season then returned the next day for his second, followed by
Kyle Morrison who hit his seventh Friday night then his eighth on Saturday.
Josh Stevenson ended Friday night with a bang swinging for his first shot of the year. Junior
John Smith III launched his fourth home run of the season in his first plate appearance on Saturday, then was followed up by
Brennan Holt knocking a three-RBI home run in the second inning to blow the game open win the eventual 18-6 win.
