MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama takes to the road for the second time in conference play against the Golden Eagles.
The Jaguars return to the diamond after facing Louisiana during last weekend with a 1-2 record in the series, winning Saturday, 8-1. South traveled up to Montgomery for their first neutral site matchup against No.11 Auburn, where the Tigers won 13-5.
SERIES HISTORY
The Jaguars lead the Golden Eagles in the all-time series, with a 69-44 overall record. The 113 total meetings ranks fourth in most-played rivalries in South Alabama history. The first meeting took place in South Alabama's third season, with a home-and-home series, split with the away team winning each game. In recent history, the Golden Eagles are 7-3 over the Jags, winning the last three series' against the Jags. The last series victory for South came in the 2021 series in Mobile. South has yet to win a three game series in Hattiesburg, Miss.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
5-1 in conference play, Southern Miss has won all 6 weekend series, but hadn't swept a team until last week against ULM. The Golden Eagles split midweek series' with Ole Miss and Mississippi State, and a Tuesday win over UT-Rio Grande Valley, which sits in the top-25 in RPI in the week of 3/24. Entering the weekend, Southern Miss dropped a midweek neutral site game against Nicholls, 8-5 in Biloxi, Miss. USM also played a weekend series hosting Louisiana Tech, which the Golden Eagles won Friday and Saturday before dropping the Sunday matchup.
HE GETS ON BASE
Sophomore Catcher
Duncan Mathews, after 21 games, was one of the most valuable players in college baseball. Mathews ranked fourth in the country in on-base percentage, reaching a bag at a .603 clip. In 14 starts, Mathews leads the team in BA and is third in the conference, with a .439 average. A defensive mainstay behind the plate, Mathews has caught three runners and works as a plus-defensive player with his slick glove movement to stretch the strike zone.
