Top Stories of 2023-24: Softball Trio Sets Numerous Records

MOBILE, Ala. | It was another big year for South Alabama Athletics in 2023-24. The Jaguars earned multiple big wins, championships, postseason appearances and awards.

Throughout the month of July, USAJaguars.com will recap some of the biggest storylines from the past year as we get ready for another big season of competition in 2024-25.

Up next, we look at a trio of softball players who etched their names in the Jaguar record books.

Lackie, Brasher and Stagner Leave Their Marks in the Jaguar Record Books

Over the course of the 2024 season, a trio of South Alabama softball players etched their names into the program's record book in both career and single-season categories.

Olivia Lackie closed out her Jaguar career holding the program marks in appearances (153), shutouts (41), and tied with Hannah Campbell in no-hitters (5). She also ranked second in opponent batting average (.183), wins (80), saves (11, complete games (77), innings pitched (774.2) and strikeouts (903).

The Walker, La., native reached her first program mark when she became the all-time shutouts leader after her 2-0 win on Feb. 18 as she passed former Jag great Devin Brown's (2015-18) previous mark of 31.

Her three Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week selections also gave her 14 for her career, setting a new program mark in that category.

She is one of six pitchers in Sun Belt Conference history to reach the 900-strikeout plateau, and also ranks among the league's all-time leaders in shutouts (second – 41), appearances (seventh) and tied for fourth in career saves.

On March 16 versus Louisiana in the series finale against Louisiana, Mackenzie Brasher tied Kaleigh Todd's career mark as she recorded the 75th stolen base of her career, and 10 days later the Orange Beach, Ala., native took sole possession of the record with her third-inning steal of second versus McNeese State, the 76th stolen base of her career. Brasher went on to end her career with 87.

In the same week that she became the program's career steals leader, Brasher also reached another milestone as she became the fifth player in program history to join the 200-hit club: Todd (231, 2015-18), Brittany Fowler (213, 2010-13), Emily Messer (208, 2013-16) and Blair Johnson (203, 2012-15).

Brasher also set the career marks for games played (230) and games started (223) during her final season in Mobile, while also ending her career second in hits (225) and third in runs scored (144).

Gabby Stagner had her best season in a Jaguar uniform in 2024 as she drove in 47 runs – the seventh-most RBI in a single season, to go along with her 32 extra-base hits. The highlight of the season came on May 4 in the series finale against Southern Miss when Stagner blasted her 14th home run of the spring. The two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth moved the junior first baseman past Kaitlyn Griffith (13) for the program's single-season home run mark at South, which had been held since the 2015 season.

Stagner had hit eight home runs each of her first two seasons with the program, and she now ranks fifth on the career list with 27 home runs in three seasons, just nine shy of tying Kamdyn Kvistad's (2018-22) program mark of 36.
