MOBILE, Ala. – It was another big year for South Alabama Athletics in 2023-24. The Jaguars earned multiple big wins, championships, postseason appearances and awards.
Throughout the month of July, USAJaguars.com will recap some of the biggest storylines from the past year as we get ready for another big season of competition in 2024-25.
Up first, we look back on a historic win for South Alabama Football.
Football Smacks Oklahoma State in Stillwater
Entering a mid-September trip to Oklahoma State, South Alabama Football had only challenged a Power 5 opponent successfully one time in program history. The Jaguars invaded Starkville, Miss. and defeated Mississippi State 21-20 to open the 2016 season, and were hoping for a similar result in their third all-time meeting with the Cowboys.
Not only did the Jags secure their second victory over a Power 5 opponent in school history, but their performance exceeded anyone's expectations.
South raced out to a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, defeating Oklahoma State 33-7 on its home turf. Thanks to a pair of touchdown tosses from quarterback
Carter Bradley, and 151 yards rushing with two scores by running back
La'Damian Webb, South Alabama scored one of the first surprise victories of the 2023 college football season.
Oklahoma State appeared as if it might climb back into the game at the start of the fourth quarter when it finally found the end zone, but the Jags responded with a quick field goal and put an exclamation point on the victory via a 65-yard touchdown run by Webb.
The Jaguars received nationwide praise for the victory and were named Cheez-It National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.
