MOBILE, Ala. – It was another big year for South Alabama Athletics in 2023-24. The Jaguars earned multiple big wins, championships, postseason appearances and awards.
 
Throughout the month of July, USAJaguars.com will recap some of the biggest storylines from the past year as we get ready for another big season of competition in 2024-25.

Thyr Wins Back-to-Back Sun Belt Championships

Thyr began championship weekend in a strong spot, going two-under after the first day with a score at 70, two strokes behind Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt. Thyr's second round was a two-over day with a 74 score. While he still sat in the top 10, he dropped four spots and was even through two rounds. On Wednesday, Thyr tied for the best round of the day, shooting for 68 and six birdies over his last nine holes to shoot up the leaderboard. Thomas Schmidt fell out of shape with a day three score of 75, leaving the two tied and forcing a playoff. 

Starting at 18, both Thyr and Schmidt birdied over the water feature, sending them to the ninth hole, again both making par. Reaching back around at 18, Schmidt's attempt over the water fell short, giving Thyr the clearance for a two-putt birdie to solidify his second conference title. 

Thyr became the first repeat Sun Belt Champion for Men's Golf since Old Dominion's Alan Schulte in 1984-85, and the eighth Jaguar to win the title.

Thyr went on to compete in his second NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge as an individual competitor. Hugo returns his junior year under Head Coach Ben Hannan and looks forward to competing with returning contributors like sophomores Joshua Hill and Joshua Achord.
