Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - South Alabama loses control in the middle innings as they drop their penultimate midweek game in seven innings, 12-2.
The Jags took the lead in the top of the second with an RBI single by
Tyler Borges sending
Rett Johnson home.
Zach Stevens took to the mound with confidence, logging two strikeouts across his career-high 4.2 innings pitched. After exiting the game with three hits and one runner to his name, Jaguar pitching failed to earn the final out of the inning, allowing another five two-out runs, then five more in the bottom of the sixth, building a mountainous 11-2 lead. The Jags broke up the 11 runs across the two innings with a solo homer from
Micah Morgan.
South struggled again in the top of the seventh offensively, and the Hornets scored the 12th run in a walk-off RBI single.
Winning Pitcher: Luis Rodriguez (6-3)
Losing Pitcher: Logan Wash (2-2)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
On Stevens' performance: I thought Zach was really good tonight and deserved a better fate. His breaking ball command was much better. He was the bright spot tonight, that was about it. I thought Zack, you know, obviously when your starter gets into the fifth, I would love for him to finish the fifth but the matchup said, with Flores up, (Logan) Wash has been one of our leverage guys. He (Flores) got to hit, okay. The fifth inning with two outs just got sideways on us. We had our guys in there that had been good and have been very reliable for us all year long and you know, you got to give Alabama State credit. They hit some of our guys. The bullpen has been one of the strengths of our team and you know tonight it didn't get it done. They got it done for us a lot this year. Tonight we did not get it done and when you don't pitch, we made some routine errors which extended the inning and you can't win like that.
