South Alabama Men Win Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championship Title

MONROE, La. —  The South Alabama men's track and field team clinched the second Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship title in program history after earning a monstrous team total of 143 points Saturday evening at Brown Stadium. Additionally, Francois Prinsloo was named the meet Top Point Scorer with 23 points.

After holding a 45-point lead at the end of Day two, South Alabama  kept things rolling and powered to 143 points to dominate the rest of the Sun Belt field by over 25 points. On the women's side, the Jags took 12th place with 35.5 points. 

Francois Prinsloo started the day off strong for the Jags in the discus. Prinsloo unleashed a throw of 62.73 meters (205'9")to bring home his fourth straight Sun Belt discus title while setting a new meet record and facility record. With this finish, Prinsloo became the top individual point scorer after he claimed the crown in the hammer throw and took sixth place in the shot put on Friday. The Jags have won the discus in 11 out of the last 16 seasons. Sebastian Loschner and Samuel Mika would also garner the top eight points for the Jags. Loschner placed fifth with a mark of 53.87 meters (176 '9), while Mika earned eighth with a personal best toss of 52.54 meters (172'4").

The Jaguars would rattle off three more second-place finishes to compile a pile of points.  

Kendal White blazed to a personal record time of 51.33 to earn the silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles and first-team All-conference honors, while Bo Webb logged a personal best time, clocking a time of 53.58 to take fifth place. 

Dorian Curry delivered a dominant performance in the high jump, leaping to a monstrous jump of 2.16 meters (7'1") to place second overall and earn first-team All-Sun Belt accolades. 

Back over on the track, Sacha Perrier blistered to a season-best time of 14:31.07 to capture the silver medal in the men's 5,000 meters. 

South's men notched two more third-team All-Sun Belt honors in the triple jump. Caleb Mabins finished in seventh place with a jump of 14.49 meters (47'6.5") and Tashod Wingfield took eighth after leaping to a season-best of 14.44 meters (47'4.5"). 

Jordan Morrison finished seventh place in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:57.21. 

Bodine Degli-Umberti and Grace Wolf led the way for the Jaguar women. Degli-Umberti snagged fourth place in the discus throw with a hurl of 49.33 meters (161'10"). Wolf picked up her fourth-place finish after blazing to a time of 1:01.08. 

Iyana Johnson placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.24 meters (40'2"). 

Tia Acker took eighth place in the 400 meters with a time of 55.31.

I'm so proud of how our entire team competed this weekend. They've put in so much work throughout the season, and that showed throughout the week in a big way. They deserve it. It's a long, grueling season, and I'm so happy to see them succeed." 

Up Next

South Alabama will set its sights on the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Ky., as several Jags have qualified for the regional on May 22-25.
