Box Score TROY, Ala. - South Alabama overcomes Troy in a 12-8 battle in the series opener.

In the opening frame, Carson Swilling came into trouble after a three-run home run gave the Trojans an early lead. Undeterred, Swilling went on to throw 6.0 innings, setting a season-high 120 pitches and tying his season high eight strikeouts.

The Jags responded not with a bang but with a constant march, loading the bases on walks in the third, then earning one run off a hit batter. The fourth inning saw freshman Jacob Haley's second career at-bat, where he lined a double to deep left field, then scored the Jags' second run off a JG Bell single. 

South took the lead in the fourth by working runners on base early. Brennan Holt drew blood first with an RBI double, but Joseph Sullivan scored off Haley's swinging strikeout that got past the catcher. Holt then scored on a different wild pitch before the bases were cleared on another wild pitch.

Sullivan led off the seventh inning with a solo shot over the right field wall to make it a 7-3 lead. 

South saw some trouble in the eighth when the Trojans loaded the bases, but Seth Carter entered the game and struck out the next two batters he faced, holding the Jaguar lead, 7-6.

The Jags began the ninth inning with echoes of the fourth, earning two walks to open the frame, then a Sullivan single opened it up for both runners to score, the second by way of an obstruction call along the third base line. After entering at first, Micah Morgan scored another with a double off the wall. Haley capped off the scoring in emphatic fashion, launching his first home run of the season into left-center field. 

Troy hit a two-RBI home run in the bottom of the ninth but it was not enough to challenge the Jags' 12 runs.

On the team's performance today: Super proud of Carson Swilling. () gave up a big three-run home run there in the first. He hung in there, put us on his back for six, gave up no earned runs after the first, and really started landing his breaking ball. They're an aggressive team with the fastball, so you gotta be able to land your offspeed and that's what he did a really nice job of after the home run through the sixth inning. All rough team effort tonight; Sully with the home run, and we played really good defense aside from that miscue on the bunt early there in the game. Really proud of Seth Carter coming in. So really, it was the starter and the end. I would have loved to have finished the game with (Jaxon) Shineflew but he had a couple of free passes in there and we couldn't we couldn't watch that again. So you know, our guys hung in there man it was nip and tuck, and anything can happen in this park, as you see with the wall out there and they're a very good offensive club. They are as advertised. We knew exactly what they were, so proud of our guys for hanging in there . We had to play 27 outs and did a great job.
