Series Preview: Jacksonville State

MOBILE, Ala. - Jaguars host in-state foe Jacksonville State for the first three game series of the season.

South Alabama looks to continue their early season success against a familiar out of conference foe in Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks are 2-2 entering the weekend after winning their opening series hosting Memphis before dropping their midweek contest at Samford. Both of JSU's victories have come by way of extra innings with their opening day going 13 frames.

South Alabama is 25-9 all time vs Jacksonville State, with the Jags being 13-5 under Head Coach Mark Calvi. Last time these teams faced off was a series at JSU, where USA took the first game before dropping the other two. The Gamecocks last visited Stanky Field in 2021, where South lost the first two games of the series before winning the final matchup.

Sophomore LHP Eli Zielinski spent last season at Jacksonville State before transferring to South. Zielinski even started a game against the Jaguars on March 11, going 5.0 innings and earning the win. Returning from injury, it is not projected that Zielinski will face his former team.

Through five games the Jaguars have stolen 15 bases placing them in the top 10 in the country in that category. At 3.00 steals per game, USA is among the most productive in all of Division I. Brennan Holt and Joseph Sullivan both lead South with four bags each
