South Alabama lost its season opener 74-70 against Central Michigan Monday night at the Mitchell Center. The Jags made a valiant effort to come back from a 22-point deficit and pulled within two points with under 2.8 seconds remaining, but the Chippewas drew a foul and iced the game with two free throws.
South Alabama Notes
- Miles Corey had a phenomenal start to the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 20 points and dishing out a career-high 11 assists in game one. Corey's 11 dimes were the most by a Jaguar since February of 2022. He joined the Jags this offseason after spending four years at Jessup University. Corey logged 104 starts, 3328 minutes, 1646 points, 321 rebounds, 282 assists, and 165 steals during his time at Jessup. The Ontario, Calif. native is a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and a four-time Golden State Athletic Conference first-team All-conference member.
- Graduate forward Judah Brown connected on a career-high five three-pointers to finish with 15 points in the season opener loss against CMU.
-Jags head coach Richie Riley served as head coach of Nicholls from 2016-18 before being named South Alabama's head coach in March of 2018. After falling in the first matchup against his former team last season, Riley will make his first return to Thibodaux since taking over at South.
- Two-time Gatorade Alabama High school player of the year, and Mobile, Ala. native, Barry Dunning Jr, joined the Jags in the offseason recruiting cycle after spending the first two seasons of his career at UAB and Arkansas. Dunning had an impressive start to the 2024-25 season, scoring 14 points and grabbing three rebounds.
- South Alabama returns 25.1 percent of its scoring, 26.1 of its rebounding, and 30.2 percent of its minutes from the 2023-24 campaign. Leading the pack of five returners is sharpshooter Julian Margrave, who finished eighth in the Sun Belt in three-pointers made with 51. Elijah Ormiston also enters his senior year with the Jags after making 16 starts and 29 appearances last season, scoring 6.2 points per contest. Graduate forward Judah Brown comes back for one last ride after appearing in 21 games with 21.3 minutes per game last year.
- The Jags welcome eight transfer newcomers to the roster - Cantia Rahming (Saint Leo), Jayden Cooper (Faulkner), Dylan Fasoyiro (Daemen), JJ Wheat (Freed Hardeman), Myles Corey (Jessup), Barry Dunning Jr (UAB), Caleb Kizer (Culver Stockton), and Randy Brady (Chattanooga).
- Five out of the eight transfers have three or more years of previous college basketball experience- Cantia Rahming (4), Dylan Fasoyiro (4), J Wheat (3), Myles Corey (4), and Caleb Kizer (3),
- Four newcomers have produced 800 or more points at their previous stints at the NAIA or Division ll level- Myles Corey (1626), Dylan Fasoyiro (882), JJ Wheat (823), and Cantia Rahming (812).
The Series
South Alabama leads the all-time series 4-1. The Jags dropped their first game against the Colonels last season in a 102-97 triple-overtime slugfest on Nov.16 in the Mitchell Center.

NSU was led by Robert Brown lll who scored 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. Ike Cornish added 14 points, Michael Gray Jr. dropped 13, and Jamal West Jr scored 10.

The Colonels were ranked third in the Southland Conference preseason coaches poll and Jamal West was named preseason first-team All-Southland.
