18 Jags selected preseason Phil Steele All-Conference

Three earn first team honors from the publication

MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama placed 18 players on the 2023 Phil Steele All-Sun Belt Team announced this week.

South Alabama placed three on the First Team led by returning all-conference performer at running back La'Damian Webb who finished the season with 1,090 yards on 209 carries despite missing parts of two games, He scored 13 touchdowns on the ground and added another two receiving touchdowns. He earned honorable mention CFN All-American honors last season after a year in which he set the single season mark for rushing topping the mark set by Tra Minters in the 2019 season.

He is joined on the first team by Yam Banks, a returning all-conference and All-American selection. He finished the season with a team-high six interceptions including one in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Banks finished with 50 total tackles, including 35 solo stops with six tackles for loss. He also recorded 11 pass breakups.

Caullin Lacy earned a pair of selections including first team punt returner and second team receiver. He recorded 21 returns for 189 yards, averaging 9.00 yards per return and scored a touchdown. As a receiver, he finished with a team-high 65 receptions for 816 yards, with six touchdowns.

He was joined on the second team by nine different players including quarterback Carter Bradley who rewrote the single season record book finishing with 2,963 yards passing and 25 touchdowns. He also completed 240 passes and was ranked in the top 50 nationally in 11 different categories. Bradley passed for 300-plus yards two times including 354 against Central Michigan and 420 against ULM with three touchdowns. He was joined by receiver Devin Voisin who finished with 64 receptions – the second-highest total on the team last season. He recorded 816 receiving yards and hauled in six touchdown receptions. The duo was joined on offense by tight end DJ Thomas-Jones who finished the season with 24 receptions for 227 yards while hauling in three touchdowns, and offensive lineman Dontae Lucas who helped anchor an offensive line that produced the second 1,000-yard rusher in school history and a near 3,000-yard passer. They helped the Jags average 423.8 yards per game of total offense per game and gave up just 1.83 sacks per game on the season.

Jamie Sheriff was one of three players chosen for the second team on defense after finished the year with 43 total tackles including 19 solo stops. He also recorded 7.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. Meanwhile, Miller finished with 68 total tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He was joined by Wy'Kevious Thomas who finished with 32 tackles while being double teamed most of the year from his nose position, forcing three sacks and recording five tackles for loss, and Marquise Robinson who finished with 28 tackles and a pair of pass breakups from his corner position.

Diego Guajardo, a Lou Groza semifinalist, was perfect on the year through nine games in field goals ranked nationally in four categories was chosen second team.

Trey Kiser, a returning honorable mention All-American, led three players on the third team defense after he finished with 76 total tackles including 56 solo stops. He also recorded 11 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He was joined by James Miller who finished with 68 total tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, and Jaden Voisin who led the team in tackles with 80 including 44 solo stops with a pair of interceptions and six tackles for loss.

Punter Jack Brooks was chosen third team after being named to the Ray Guy Watch List and averaged 43.07 yards per punt on the season and forced 14 fair catches.

Braylon McReynolds was named fourth team as a return specialist after averaging 23.06 yards per return on 16 kickoffs, and he was joined by offensive lineman Adrein Strickland who was instrumental in helping anchor an offensive line that produced the second 1,000-yard rusher in school history and a near 3,000-yard passer. They helped the Jags average 423.8 yards per game of total offense per game and gave up just 1.83 sacks per game on the season. They were joined by long snapper Travis Drosos who snapped on every field goal, extra point, and punt last season.
