Jags hit the road to Southern Miss for key Sun Belt series

With three weeks remaining in conference play, South is tied with four teams for sixth place

MOBILE, Ala. | With just three conference series remaining, South Alabama finds itself in a log jam in the conference standings and will look to get out of that with a trip to Hattiesburg (Miss.) this weekend to face Southern Miss.

The series is scheduled to start Friday night.

South Alabama (23-21, 11-10 SBC) is tied with four other teams for sixth place in the standings, with the top ten advancing to the conference tournament in just over three weeks in Montgomery. The Jags have the tiebreaker over Georgia State and Troy who are tied with them, and with James Madison who is two games back in the win column. They sit just one game back in the loss column of App State, one game back of Texas State, two games back of Georgia Southern, and three games back of Southern Miss (29-15, 14-7 SBC).

Will Turner leads South Alabama at the plate, hitting .380 on the season with an OPS of 1.168. He has collected 65 hits (second in the conference) with 26 of those being for extra bases including nine home runs, while also scoring 46 runs and driving in another 46. Meanwhile, Erick Orbeta is hitting .311 on the season with 12 doubles from the leadoff spot, while Joseph Sullivan is hitting .311 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI (16 stolen bases). Colson Lawrence leads the team with 11 home runs.

As a team, South Alabama is hitting .277 through 44 games.

On the mound, a pair of relievers lead the way for South Alabama led by Matthew DeLano (2-0, 6.30ERA) with 13 appearances and Grant Wood (4-2, 5.20 ERA) with five saves and 18 appearances, while Lawrence (2-0, 2.45 ERA) has come out of the pen to record three saves. Mitchell Heer (3-2, 4.78 ERA) and Jeremy Lee (2-5, 5.23 ERA) have helped with the Jags turnaround, while Leif Moore (3-0, 2.96 ERA) has moved into the weekend rotation after a pair of midweek wins.
