Box Score JONESBORO, Ark. | South Alabama fell behind early before falling to Arkansas State 7-2 at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field on Thursday night in Sun Belt Conference action.
Arkansas State (18-31, 8-19 SBC) got on the board with a pair of runs in the first on a pair of bases-loaded walks. South Alabama (23-29, 11-17 SBC) was able to trim the lead down to one at 3-2 in the fourth before the Red Wolves scored four unanswered to push the lead to 7-2.
Hunter Donaldson led South Alabama at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI, while
Austin Thrasher finished 2-for-4.
Will Turner was able to extend his consecutive game streak of reaching base to 31 games with a ninth-inning walk.
Leif Moore (3-2) suffered the loss, working just 1.0 inning and allowing three runs on two hits with a pair of walks.
Eric Lin and
Jackson Boyd came on to work a combined seven innings in relief allowing four runs (just two earned) on six hits with a combined five strikeouts. Boyd recorded five strikeouts in his 4.0 innings of work for the Jags.
How It Happened
- (B1) Arkansas State used a pair of bases loaded walks to get on the board, the first by Kody Darcy and the second by Nathan VerMass, Arkansas State 2-0.
- (T2) Micah Morgan singled down the right field line to score JG Bell and trim the deficit in half, Arkansas State 3-1.
- (B2) Blake Burris drove in a run on an RBI groundout, Arkansas State 3-1.
- (T4) Donaldson singled to left center to score Bell, Arkansas State 3-2.
- (B4) Daedrick Cail drew the third bases loaded walk of the night bringing in Wil French before Brandon Caskey singled to right to bring in Blake Burris. Darcy kept the inning alive after a pitching change reaching on a fielder's choice that drove in a run, Arkansas State 6-2.
- (B7) Brayden Caskey reached on a fielder's choice before coming around to score on a pair of throwing errors, Arkansas State 7-2.
Up Next
The two teams will meet in game two of the series on Friday afternoon at 3 pm, a game originally scheduled for later in the day but moved up due to weather.
