South Alabama set to open Fall Camp on Friday

Jags open the season at home on September 3 against Nicholls

MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama is set to open fall camp on Friday morning, the second under head coach Kane Wommack, ahead of the season opener against Nicholls at home on September 3.

The Jaguars will hit the field at 10 am for the first practice of camp and return a wealth of talent on both sides of the football, mixed with a few newcomers who can make a difference this season. That will be the focus of Wommack from year one to year two.

"The role of a head coach transitions a lot from year one to year two in your program," he said at Sun Belt Conference Media Day. "In year one, you spend a lot of time casting a vision for your program, reinforcing that vision and holding people accountable to it. And then making sure you have the right pieces to the puzzle. We have continuity with our staff, to our roster, and we have added quite a few pieces. Adding to that expectation and culture is a portion of what I do.

"But going into year two, there are so many people in the building who understand the expectation and standard of what we are building and the championship culture at South Alabama, it helps me to focus on some of the more nuanced details that narrow the margin of error. We don't set goals in our program of wanting to win championships and go to bowl games, all we want to do is narrow the margin of error, so we are operating in that margin of success. That is my job of going into year two and fixing some of those small details."

The 2022 roster will look a little different than it did in 2021, however, several players return who were placed on preseason Watch Lists including Darrell Luter Jr. who was placed on three preseason Watch Lists – Jim Thorpe Award, Bednarik Award, and Bronko Nagurski Award – while also being picked first-team Preseason All-Sun Belt. He was joined on the first team by Keith Gallmon Jr. who was named to the Wuerffel Award Watch List.

A pair of specialists also found their way onto a watch list with Jack Brooks being named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List, and Travis Drosos named to the Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List.

"When you look at that jump that you hope a team makes from year one to year two, you look back at those things that held us back from being a successful program on the field with consistency," Wommack said. "I think that word consistency is the biggest piece from a year ago. A number of factors go into that whether it be not having enough depth at a certain position that we need, understanding new schemes, understanding how important it is to do things right off the field. I think we are improved in a number of areas in our program including talent, schematics, expectations, standards … all those things are getting better. I think we are better than we were last year, what that means, I don't know. If we continue to be steady on the processes we built up to this point, we will give ourselves a chance."

During camp, we will look inside the program and at the 2022 schedule to get fans ready for the upcoming season.
