MOBILE – Athlon Sports released its 2022 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team on Monday, highlighted by nine South Alabama Jaguars including a pair of defensive backs named as first team selections.
Cornerback
Darrell Luter Jr. was selected for the First Team after a year in which he earned All-America honors by a trio of publications and All-Sun Belt Conference honors. In addition to posting 21 tackles, he paced the Jaguars with four interceptions and 10 others passes defended while leading the conference in passes defended per game. He was also second in the Sun Belt in interceptions per game, while ending the season ranked third in the country in passes defended and seventh in interceptions per game.
Meanwhile, safety
Keith Gallmon Jr. was also named to the First Team after a 2021 season that earned him Second Team All-Sun Belt honors. Gallmon started all 12 games, posting 59 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss. He also tallied two pass break-ups, an interception and a fumble recovery while also finishing second on the team in total tackles after leading the Jaguars in four games, tied for most on the team. Gallmon posted a season-high nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss against Texas State to highlight the season.
The Jaguars also had a second team selection in tight end
Lincoln Sefcik who earned Third Team All-Sun Belt honors for his performance in 2021. In his first season with the program, Sefick caught 32 passes for 218 yards and added five touchdowns, while leading South Alabama tight ends in catches, receiving yards, and touchdown catches.
Wide receiver
Jalen Wayne led three Jaguars on the third team after a year in which he earned honorable mention honors on the All-Sun Belt team. He posted 53 catches for 630 yards, finishing second in each category, and scored a pair of touchdowns. He was joined on the third team by defensive lineman
Wy'Kevious Thomas who posted 49 total tackles on his way to honorable mention all-conference honors last season. He also had 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and three quarterback hurries. Kicker
Diego Guajardo rounded out the third team selections after leading the Jaguars with 69 points on 12-of-17 field goals and 33-of-35 extra point attempts. He also recorded 23 touchbacks on 59 kickoffs.
The Jaguars also had three fourth team selections led by a pair of offensive linemen in
James Jackson and
Antawn Lewis. Jackson started seven of his eight appearances at center in his first year with the program, and helped anchor a line that saw South Alabama average a school-record 256 passing yards per game, while posting its best total offense average since 2016. Meanwhile, Lewis played and started 11 games and helped the team average 382.4 yards per game on total offense. Rounding out the fourth team selections is linebacker
A.J. DeShazor who was named honorable mention All-Sun Belt in 2021 after recording 64 total tackles. He also finished with 2.5 tackles for loss and was ranked 25th in the conference with an average of 5.3 tackles per game.
