South Alabama owns a 19-2 all-time lead over Alabama State in a series that dates back to 1987. The Jags have won seven straight over the Hornets dating back to the 2016 NCAA Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional after a 10-0 shutout over ASU last Wednesday at Stanky Field. USA is 11-2 all-time against ASU under head coach Mark Calvi.
JOHNSON TO MAKE FIRST CAREER START
Jaguar right-hander Walker Johnson is scheduled to make his first career start at South Alabama Tuesday at Alabama State. Johnson enters the game 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA, and has combined for one shutout while striking out 16 batters with six walks in 10 innings, which spans seven relief appearances. Johnson has not allowed a run in his last four appearances, dating back to March 22 against Auburn, and has struck out five batters and issued just one walk in 2 2/3 innings pitched in that span.Â
SIMINGTON IN SBC RANKINGS
Right fielder Miles Simington leads the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.388), ranks second in RBIs (33), tied for second in hits (45), tied for fourth in doubles (10), seventh in on-base percentage (.448), eighth in total bases (68) and ninth in slugging percentage (.586).
HIT STREAKS, ON-BASE STREAKS
Will Turner and Diego Altamirano each carry a team-best 17-game on-base streak into Tuesday's contest. Erick Orbeta has reached base safely in 15 straight games. Landon Jordan owns the team's longest hitting streak at five games.
TISSUE AMONG NATIONAL LEADERSÂ
Third baseman Cameron Tissue ranks fifth in nationally in sacrifice bunts (8), which ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference. Pat Murphy (1992) owns the single-season record at USA for sacrifice bunts with 18.
JAGS IN NATIONAL, SBC RANKINGS
The South Alabama pitching staff ranks sixth in hits allowed per nine innings (6.77), seventh in WHIP (1.14), 12th in shutouts (4) and 16th in ERA (3.49). The Jags lead the Sun Belt Conference in ERA, opposing batting average (.208), fewest hits allowed (204), runs allowed (121), earned runs allowed (105) and walks allowed (106).
4 IN A ROW
South Alabama went 4-0 last week with three shutouts in four contests. The Jags shut out Alabama State 10-0 last Wednesday at Stanky Field, and swept App State in three games over the weekend with a pair of 9-0 shutouts - one in the series opener and in the series finale. USA has shut out four opponents this season.
MONTIEL'S LAST 14 GAMES
In his last 14 games, dating back to a March 19 contest against UTA, shortstop Santi Montiel is batting .339 (19-for-56) with five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBIs, 18 runs scored, one stolen base and .415 on-base percentage.Â
JAGS SET SEASON HIGH IN HITS VERSUS HORNETS
South Alabama recorded a season-high 16 hits in last Wednesday's win over Alabama State, surpassing its previous high of 15 which came against Rhode Island (Feb. 25) and Auburn (March 22).Â
SEASON HIGH IN WALKS AGAINST APP STATE
The Jags drew a season-high 13 walks against Appalachian State in Sunday's series finale, bettering their previous high of nine which came against UT Arlington on March 18 at Stanky Field.
STOKES AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN DOUBLES
First baseman Hunter Stokes ranks tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference in doubles (11) entering the week. Stokes recorded his team-leading 11th double of the season in last Friday's series opener with App State.
MONTIEL AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN RUNS
Shortstop Santi Montiel ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in runs scored (32) entering Tuesday's contest. Montiel has scored seven runs in his last six games, including three in the final two games of last weekend's App State series.
162 AND COUNTING
Shortstop Santi Montiel has started 162 consecutive games - every game since he joined the program in 2019 - with his 150th coming in the series finale with UT Arlington on March 20.
LEADING AFTER 7 INNINGS
The Jaguars are 18-0 when leading after seven innings this season, but are 0-9 when trailing after seven frames and 2-1 when the score is tied through seven.
OUTHITTING THE OPPOSITION
South Alabama is 20-3 when outhitting opponents this season, but is 0-5 when being out-hit and 0-2 when hits are tied.Â
RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION
USA is batting .297 (112-for-377) with runners in scoring position this season, led by Miles Simington who is hitting .415 (17-for-41) with RISP.
JAGS ON THE ROAD
In 13 road games this season, South Alabama is batting .264 with 25 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 64 RBIs, 68 runs scored, six stolen bases and a .349 on-base percentage.
