SOUTH FOOTBALL’S WOMMACK HONORED BY THE CITY OF MOBILE

3/8/2022 4:00:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – One of the mantras that has been at the forefront of the University of South Alabama football program since the arrival of head coach Kane Wommack has been the two-word slogan "Our City" and the embracement of the Mobile community, as he was honored by Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson for his efforts as an ambassador for the city.

During Tuesday's Mobile City Council meeting held at Government Plaza, Wommack received the Mayor's Exceptional Citizenship Medal for "instilling civic leadership in the University of South Alabama athletes and being an honorable ambassador for the City of Mobile."

"Mobile is a very special place to both me and my family," Wommack said. "I believe in the growth of Mobile and being committed to that in my role as the head coach at South Alabama. A goal of mine is to connect our football program with the city of Mobile, so I'm deeply honored to be recognized in that way. I see myself as an active participant and citizen in the city of Mobile and want to do everything I can to move the dial forward for our city, our university and our football program."

Since coming back to Mobile, Wommack has shown a commitment to helping his players grow on and off the field. In particular, the team's slogan: "Our City" goes beyond protecting home field from visiting teams. Wommack has used that as a rallying cry to drive home the importance of civic engagement and community responsibility with the student-athletes in the Jaguar program.

"Good football coaches develop good players; great football coaches develop good men. Coach Wommack is teaching his players to use the influence they have because of their position and to give back to our community," Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. "The 'Our City' slogan he has instilled in this Jaguar team should remind all Mobilians to take pride in and to care of our community and its citizens."

Wommack has made it a point of emphasis during his brief tenure at the helm for not only himself, but the student-athletes, coaching and support staff and anyone associated with the program, to embrace the city of Mobile as their own. The Jaguar head coach has been very present out in the community through many different platforms.

During the 2021 season, Wommack and the program both embraced and featured many different elements from our community, incorporating helmet decals such as city native Hank Aaron's No. 44 in the season opener versus Southern Miss, the U.S.S. Alabama battleship, and the downtown Mobile skyline, as well as holding a Mardi Gras type pre-game parade on the team's way into the stadium, as well as the #OurCity on apparel, video, social media and other areas within the program.
