MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football program, under the direction of second-year head coach Kane Wommack, went through a nearly two-hour practice Monday morning at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility.
South Alabama is scheduled to practice Wednesday and Friday morning from 9-10:45 a.m. All practices will be closed to the general public.
Below are highlights from post practice interviews with the media.
Head coach Kane Wommack
- On the first practice in pads: "The thing that we are trying to stress today and really throughout the entire spring is just the overall physicality of our team going into year two. Obviously until you get pads on there are things you can do to build up to that point but today was certainly a tremendous upgrade in terms of physicality overall."
- On the third day of practice: "It's exciting to watch our new guys and the guys who have been here taking the next step. It's exciting to see how the players and pieces we have added to the puzzle. From an execution standpoint we have some good things for day three. We try to put a lot in during the first five days of practice. Our guys are handling it ok so we will continue to build off of that and just the overall execution."
- On Darell Luter Jr.: "He had a pretty good year. Luter is a special player. He has just gone and done his work. If you look at him coming out of high school he wasn't the most sought after recruit but if you look at him now he has developed himself into a true NFL prospect. It's exciting to watch. I think the way we have structured our defense here shows off his skill set and we have taken advantage of that."
Cornerback Darell Luter Jr.
- On his performance and accolades last season: "It feels really good. Coming from high school and not getting many offers and then going to JUCO and then coming here. It's just a big change. I always stay humble but it does feel good though."
- On his performance in spring practice: "I just want to continue being consistent this year and that's what it is looking like for me."
- On newcomers at corner: "Marquise Robinson and Jamar Richardson [have stood out]. We are looking for both of them to make a big impact. They've both been doing pretty good. We are just trying to get them into the rhythm of things."
Linebacker James Miller
- On the defense: "I like how the defense is set up. It allows me to just play and be myself so I can do well. When I go out there I'm back in the system I know so I make less mistakes because I already know what to do. I can relate to what the other guys are going through because I already did that."
- On the linebackers: "I try to help the linebacker crew too. We all work together. Even though only two of us are out there at a time we work as a team and a core to make sure we have the knowledge when we get out there.
- On spring practice so far: "We had a physical practice today and I like that. We can lead the way like that. If we are all physical then nobody can knock us off."
