2022 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List

FORT WORTH, Texas – University of South Alabama shortstop Santi Montiel was named to the 2022 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award watch list, as announced Tuesday by the organization.

Montiel is one of two Sun Belt Conference student-athletes on the watch list, which features 44 student-athletes across Division I baseball, and is joined by Arkansas State's Ben Klutts.

Montiel was named to the 2021 SBC Championship All-Tournament Team and NCAA Gainesville All-Regional Team. He hit safely in 14 of his final 17 games of the year in 2021, and recorded nine multi-hit games in that span. He batted .295 with 16 doubles, seven home runs, 34 RBIs, 39 runs scored, .406 on-base percentage and one stolen base last season in 58 games. 

Montiel has started 132 consecutive games at South Alabama. He fielded .976 with five errors in 211 chances in 2021. In Sun Belt Conference games last year, he recorded a .988 fielding percentage with just one error in 88 total chances. Montiel closed the 2021 season with a four-game hit streak, and reached base safely in 14 straight SBC games to close conference play.

The award, created by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity. The winner of the BBCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club. Texas Tech's Hunter Hargrove won the initial BBCSA in 2017. Dallas Baptist's Devlin Granberg took home the honor in 2018 with Texas Tech's Josh Jung winning the award in 2019. Last year's winner was Connor Norby from East Carolina University.

The Jaguars will open the 2022 season Fri., Feb. 18, when they host Radford at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
