Date: 4/6
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Uppers (helmets and shoulder pads)
Featured Offensive Player of the Day: Lincoln Sefcik, So., TE, Enid, Okla.
-Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite on Sefcik: "Lincoln didn't get a chance to play much ball last year, but he has really impressed us. Obviously he has great physical skills, he's done a great job this offseason getting prepared and learning a brand new offense. He is giving [assistant] Coach [Rob] Ezell everything that he has, he's in there early studying. Lincoln gives us some flexibility and some versatility with our calls because he can get down the field vertically and catch passes but also be instrumental in the run game. I've been pleased with his development."
Featured Defensive Player of the Day: Keon Voisin, So., S, Crestview, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon on Voisin: "Keon has had a limited role in the past but is really coming on. He has very good athleticism, he has cover skills like a corner but is physical enough to play in the box. He is grasping the system and doing a great job of being a better communicator as well as learning the ins and outs of the defense. I'm really happy with where he is at right now, and I can see he has a sense of purpose with seven days left in this spring camp to improve himself. He's doing a nice job for us."
Play of the Day: Jake Bentley connected with a diving Cade Sutherland for a big gain down the sideline during the team's second team period of the afternoon, with Bentley's completion over the middle to Jalen Tolbert in the next team period also considered for the honor.
Team period highlights: The practice included four different team periods lasting from eight to 12 minutes in length. The first two focused on the run game and a mix of perimeter and third-down calls while the second two included the offense both attempting to move the ball and work on plays in the red zone as well as a two-minute drill.
Miscellaneous Notes
-The Jaguars went through periods of emphasis, group work and installation over the first 50 minutes of the day.
-Special teams work included a pair of periods covering punt fundamentals and scheme — the first of those also featured drills on kickoff coverage — with four of Jack Brooks' five punts going 50-plus yards as he averaged 52.6 yards per kick in the practice.
-During a third three-minute special teams segment of practice Diego Guajardo converted 4-of-5 field goals attempts with the last coming from 50 yards out.
-Nick Mobley closed the first team period with a tackle for loss before ending the day with a sack on the final snap of the afternoon.
-Charles Coleman III was credited with two sacks in team periods for the Jaguar defense as well, while Chris Henderson, Jaden Voisin and Kelvin Johnson recorded tackles behind the line too.
-Bentley connected on his first six attempts of the opening team period while also closing our 7-on-7 passing drills with four consecutive completions.
-Tolbert led South's offense with six catches the second half of practice, and Caullin Lacy posted five receptions as well.
-The trio of Tolbert, Jared Wilson and Cameron Hatcher-Owens accounted for the unit's three touchdown catches when the skeleton passing drills period wrapped up in the red zone.
-Ryan Melton and Devin Rockette each intercepted passes, with both Keon and Jaden Voisin as well as Davyn Flenord breaking up passes for the defense.
-All practices are closed to the general public.
THEY SAID IT
Head coach Kane Wommack
-On what saw watching film of Saturday's scrimmage: "I was really pleased with the overall organization — people knew where to go and what to do — to get the reps we needed to get in and the urgency to get lined up. I thought we were able to create some explosive plays offensively, which was really good to see, and some negatives defensively; when you go back and watch the film there were some negative plays we created with sacks and we generated a good pass rush. But you could also see tons of things that we need to clean up. It was a great opportunity to go out there live and see some guys tackling, which for the first scrimmage I thought was pretty good. Overall, I was really pleased with some pieces that I can see fitting in the bigger puzzle moving forward."
-On the team's quarterbacks: "They have a hungry demeanor about them right now. We have put a heavy amount of install over the first eight practices, we introduced a two-minute situation with them today. I think they are doing a great job of staying on top of the install and not letting it overwhelm them so we can run our offense and be efficient with the things we are doing. I see some good things from them, they are making some good throws that are leading to explosive plays and making some good decisions to take care of the football; the first group on Saturday didn't turn the ball over one time. We are doing a good job of taking care of the football and managing the offense, and I'm starting to see guys create explosive plays down the field in the passing game. It's been very exciting to see that."
Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite
-On what he saw from the offense in the scrimmage: "I saw a lot of good things. I'm very proud of these guys over the last 12 weeks, there's a lot we want to do offensively and they dove right in. I was really pleased to see them go out and execute, but that being said there is still a million miles to go in terms of what we need to do. I was proud that coming out of the first scrimmage the first-team offense had zero turnovers — that's something we're going to always put a premium on — and that there were some explosive plays in there, although not as many as we want to create. Some of the guys in depth and role positions came in and had opportunities to shine. It was our first opportunity to go out there and see them execute with coaches on the sideline sending signals, to work through situations and to drive down the field. I was very pleased with what we saw in the first scrimmage, but we have to refocus for the second half of the spring season."
Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon
-On his evaluation of the defense's performance on Saturday: "I have liked the effort and the intensity that the kids have shown thus far in the spring, they really have a desire to learn every day; you are seeing more and more guys showing up in the building during off days trying to watch tape, learn and digest. Saturday was good, as coaches we were able to step off the field and let them run the show and communicate. I was really happy with the communication, the effort and the mentality that has been established so far in camp."
Junior WR Jalen Tolbert
-On what he thought of the scrimmage on Saturday: "We all came out here and competed, both sides of the ball made some plays. We went back and watched and found areas that we can improve, now we're coming out for these last six practices to work on those going into the second scrimmage and the spring game."
-On being on the same page with Jake Bentley: "I knew Jake beforehand from QB Country so we had thrown a couple of times before he actually got here. When he got here we were eager to work so we began to do that whether it was up here or in the backyard, we got some catches and some running in. It was good for us to make that connection early before we actually came out for the spring."
