Miscellaneous Notes
-It was the second of three scrimmages during the spring season for the program.
-The event saw the Jag offense run nearly 150 plays, with the unit posting a total of 714 yards while averaging just over five yards per snap.
-USA quarterbacks combined to account for 523 of those yards through the air — the group connected on 43-of-77 attempts — with 191 yards coming on 65 carries.
-The Jaguars defense recorded 15 tackles for loss, including nine sacks, and broke up seven passes to go along with collecting three takeaways.
-Not only did Keon Voisin return his interception for a score, he forced a fumble that Gi'Narious Johnson recovered in the end zone to end the offense's first possession in the red zone while also breaking up a pass and posting two stops.
-It was the second straight scrimmage that Tolbert has recorded over 100 yards and multiple touchdowns receiving.
-Bentley has now thrown for more than 200 yards in each of the team's scrimmages this spring, totaling seven touchdowns in the process.
-In addition to recording multiple stops behind the line of scrimmage, both Banks and Higdon were also able to break up a pass.
-The team's five running backs who participated in the scrimmage combined to gain 167 yards with three — Avery, Phillips and Wilson — reaching the end zone.
-Avery was the only individual other than Tolbert to score more than one touchdown after he later added a 16-yard catch to cap a red zone drive.
THEY SAID IT
Head coach Kane Wommack
-On his evaluation of the scrimmage: "I was really pleased with the improvement on each side of the ball from practice one to the point where we are now. Certainly there are tons of things to clean up, but you can do that if you operate with a growth mindset as these guys have over these first 11 practices. I saw the things that we wanted to emphasize and clean up from the first scrimmage today, that was exciting. We're getting better on both sides of the ball understanding situational downs, and on top of that we're tackling well and we're playing with great effort. There were a ton of great things that I saw, we have a lot of momentum on our team right now that we want to continue the last week of the spring season."
-On turnovers in the scrimmage: "We don't call them turnovers on defense, the offense may have turned the ball over but we created takeaways which implied that we did what we needed to defensively. It was great to see some of the takeaways, we had a nice interception and we got the ball out a couple of times. In the first scrimmage our ones didn't turn the ball over so we will have to clean that up offensively, but defensively it was great to see in a live situation that we had a little more urgency about the ball after emphasizing that this week."
-On how the team will approach special teams units: "You want to get your playmakers the ball. I think Jalen [Tolbert] does a tremendous job with yards after the catch so we need to give him an opportunity to see what his value can be on special teams. Great players have to play on special teams, that is our team identity; we're going to utilize our best players in all phases, so you're going to see Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Wayne and our best players on defense out there making plays because that's the difference in games."
-On the team's health at this point in the spring: "We had a couple of guys banged up today, I want to see where they are, but we've come out of here okay. There will always be a few things, in a transition from one head coach to another there's a month-and-a-half to two-month period where you don't have your hands on them as much which is something we've had to consider as we've gone through the spring to make sure we are taking care of their bodies. I think we've done a pretty good job with that to this point."
Senior QB Jake Bentley
-On the team's second scrimmage: "I thought it was a good day, it was real competitive today. I know some of the guys were disappointed that we couldn't go in the stadium because of the weather, but we really got after it. It was a lot of fun today."
-On the difference between last weekend's scrimmage and today: "I think it was just confidence. We do things in practice with the coaches on the field, but it was our second time being out there by yourself where you have to line up and know the plays. We were able to come out here and run some of those same plays, the guys played with a lot more confidence and I think it showed."
-On the importance of scoring on the opening drive of the day: "It raises the spirits of the offense for sure, it brings a lot of life and energy. I think it gave the twos confidence seeing us score, they think they can do it too. Coming out early and scoring is always big whether it's a scrimmage, a game or practice."
-On Caullin Lacy: "The coaches might feel differently, but I think he has really improved and is playing with so much more confidence now. He's showed great improvement since day one, we wanted to reward him and put him in some situations to be able to make plays and he made them."
Sophomore DL Charles Coleman III
-On his evaluation of the scrimmage: "As a unit I think the defensive line did a fairly good job pass rushing but we still have a lot to work on in that area to be more consistent. The emphasis for today's scrimmage was to have more energy and be more consistent."
-On how he thinks the defense is doing with one week remaining in the spring season: "I think it's going great, I really like this defense."
Sophomore S Keon Voisin
-On his interception: "He definitely doesn't throw a lot of those so I had to take advantage of that. I just broke on the ball and took it to the house."
-On the defense's performance in the scrimmage: "I'm going to give it to our d-line, it helps us a lot when we're in man coverage and only have to cover a guy for two seconds when they get back there. They really did a tremendous job helping our secondary."
Junior WR Jalen Tolbert
-On how the team fared in the scrimmage: "Overall it was good on both sides of the ball. We did some great things, now we'll be able to go in and watch and evaluate to see what we can improve on."
-On the difference for the offense from the first scrimmage of the spring: "We fixed some of the errors we saw in the last scrimmage, that's what we came out here to work on. And it was good for us to put situational things on film to be able to watch that as well."
