UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE REPORT – 3/30

3/30/2021 6:55:00 PM

Date: 3/30
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Full pads

Featured Offensive Player of the Day: Terrion Avery, Jr., RB, Wiggins, Miss.
-Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite on Avery: "Terrion has done an excellent job at everything thus far, I've been very pleased with his awareness in pass protection, his route running, the way he runs the football and his understanding of what to do.  He is ahead of the game in terms of why he is doing what he is doing, I've been pleased with the way he has learned as well as his overall focus and intensity every day at practice.  He has a special ability to run the football.  It's going to be interesting to watch him on Saturday — which will be the first time we'll actually go out there and tackle the backs — but I've been very encouraged by him so far."

Featured Defensive Player of the Day: Dewayne Betts Jr., Jr., S, Memphis, Tenn.
-Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon on Betts: "Dewayne is a long, athletic guy who runs really well for his size.  He was a junior-college quarterback so he does a good job of communicating, and has a very good understanding of the defense.  Every day he has come out and gotten better at something.  I have been very excited with his play thus far, and his attention to detail is attention to detail is something that is very encouraging."

Play of the Day: On the second play from scrimmage of the second team period, an AJ Phillips block on the edge sprung Caullin Lacy for a big gain on a pop pass from Jake Bentley.

Team period highlights: The first team period of the day concentrated on short-yardage run calls, with two periods following later in the afternoon focused on offensive plays against the blitz and snaps in the red zone.

-Darrell Luter Jr. and Wy'Kevious Thomas were both credited with tackles for loss during the first team period.
-The Jaguar defense broke up four passes during the second team period, with Bentley also connecting with Devin Voisin for a 41-yard touchdown during that segment of practice.
-During 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills, Bentley and Tanner McGee combined to hit nine of their first 11 attempts.
-South's defense was credited with four tackles for loss — including a pair of third-down sacks — during the last team period of the afternoon.

-All practices are closed to the general public.

THEY SAID IT
Head coach Kane Wommack
-On the team's practices so far this spring: "I am really pleased with the effort that the guys have been bringing, I feel there is an urgency to get better, learn what we are doing schematically on each side of the ball and improve the fundamentals of what we are doing.  We had a chance to go live today, usually when you go live more than anything it's about remembering what to do and seeing fundamentals show up; that will give us great film we can teach off of.  The focus of this team needs to be on a demeanor that wants to get better every single play and every single day, I think we are on the right track."
-On the physicality in Tuesday's workout: "I like to see that as a head coach.  Obviously one of our fundamental core values defensively is the physicality that we play with but I also like what I am seeing up front from the offensive line — there is a nastiness to them right now, they are straining to finish their blocks — and we have some backs who are running the ball really hard.  Major and the rest of the offensive staff are doing a phenomenal job of establishing an identity in the run game, and we are pretty dynamic in the passing game.  We are doing some really good things we can build off of."
-On what the coaches will look for on tape from the practice: "When you add another element to practice, which is live work, remembering what we are doing schematically and staying focused on that while at the same time focusing on the fundamentals of what we do — blocking, tackling, finishing routes.  Those are the things that make the difference between executing and converting on third down or having to go punt.  Defensively, we might have tagged off on somebody in a thud or a wiz tempo period, but all of a sudden that angle you took is not going to work in a live period.  We want to use it to teach the fundamentals of what we do while at the same time staying focused on what we are trying to execute schematically."

Up next: South have a 3:30 p.m. practice Thursday, it's final workout prior to the first scrimmage of the spring season.
