SOUTH FOOTBALL SET TO START FIRST SPRING SEASON UNDER WOMMACK

3/17/2021 2:55:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama football team will open up the spring season with a workout Saturday, the first of 15 leading into the program's annual spring game next month.

The practice will get underway at 10 a.m. (CDT) at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility, with the Jaguars also working out at the facility at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Both sessions will be conducted in just helmets and shorts.

"As you approach spring ball, the excitement level for me is in having a vision in my head of what the culture at South Alabama is going to look like," said first-year South head coach Kane Wommack.  "To have an opportunity for coaches and players to engage and interact — where there is real adversity and conflict on the football field that they have to overcome — and work together to improve is the most exciting thing about building a program and a culture.  I'm looking forward to seeing that day in and day out, week in and week out during the spring season."

Over the next four weeks the Jags will practice at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility each Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m., concluding the week with a 10 a.m. workout on Saturday.  There will be an additional session starting at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 5 as well.

The spring season will conclude with the Jaguars' annual spring game, which will take place at Hancock Whitney Stadium at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 17.  Parking — with the exception of Lot D — will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 8 a.m. that day, although no tailgating will take place, with gates slated to open one hour prior to the start of the contest.  Similar to the 2020 regular season, seating capacity will be limited to 25 percent of the facility with groups of up to four socially distanced from other fans; all individuals will be required to wear a mask unless actively eating or drinking.

Jag fans can register for spring game seats at no cost by visiting usajaguars.com/springgame2021, with tickets expected to be sent via mobile delivery or through a print-at-home option the week of game.

South currently is set to return 59 letterwinners in the fall, and has added 10 newcomers who signed either National Letters-of-Intent or transferred into the program at the start of the spring semester.

"First and foremost, we need to identify the players we need to feature in the right situations and in the right schemes offensively, defensively and on special teams," Wommack said.  "We need to make sure that we create enough depth while finding a way to get the right players in the right match-ups across the board.  Within that, we want to have a firm understanding of both the fundamentals and scheme within each unit — offense, defense and special teams — and at the same time begin to develop situational understanding so that when the game matters most we can execute at the highest level.  We're looking for great execution in the two-minute drill, red zone, third-down conversions and four-minute offense, all those things that matter so that when the game is on the line we are able to have an identity and an understanding philosophically from our players what is expected out of them in those moments."

All practices will be closed to the general public.
