2021 Schedule

MOBILE, Ala. – Four Sun Belt Conference home series and three Southeastern Conference opponents highlight the 2021 University of South Alabama baseball schedule, as announced Thursday by head coach Mark Calvi.

South Alabama will open the season with a pair of games in Hammond, Louisiana, on Feb. 20. USA will open with Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. contest against host Southeastern Louisiana. The Jags will close the weekend with a 5 p.m. contest with MVSU (Feb. 21).

USA will host Southern Miss (Feb. 23) in its home opener before kicking off a four-game road swing with a three-game series at Oral Roberts (Feb. 26-27) and a midweek contest at New Orleans (March 3).

South Alabama will host Middle Tennessee (March 5-7) in its first weekend series at Stanky Field, followed by a midweek matchup at Alabama (March 9).

The Jags open a four-game home stand with a three-game set with Jacksonville State (March 12-14), and close the stand with a midweek contest against Southern Miss (March 16).

USA will travel to Arlington, Texas, to square off with UTA (March 19-21) to open Sun Belt Conference play, followed by two midweek contests at Auburn (March 23), which will be played in Montgomery, Alabama, and against Southern (March 24) at Stanky Field.

The Jags will then hit the road for a four-game road swing that begins with a three-game series at Northwestern State (March 26-28) and ends with a midweek matchup at LSU (March 30).

South Alabama will play six consecutive Sun Belt games to start April. USA hosts Troy (April 1-3) at Stanky Field before hitting the road for a three-game SBC set at Little Rock (April 9-11).

The Jaguars will travel to Southern Miss (April 13) for a midweek contest before hosting Louisiana (April 16-18) in a three-game conference series at Stanky Field. South Alabama will face Alabama State (April 20) in Montgomery, Alabama, before returning home to host Southern (April 21).

USA will then host Georgia State (April 23-25) in a three-game conference set before kicking off a six-game SBC road trip. The Jags will face Georgia Southern (April 30-May 1) in Statesboro, Georgia, followed by a three-game series at Texas State (May 7-9).

South Alabama will host Coastal Carolina (May 14-16) to close out its home schedule, and will travel to Boone, North Carolina, for a three-game SBC series with Appalachian State to close the regular season. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is scheduled for May 25-30 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

"Our schedule, for the most part minus week one, stayed intact," Calvi said. "It's been a fire drill getting the schedule finalized. The biggest problem was ours was good, but we had five or six opponents in the last three months for that opening weekend. I feel very fortunate that Southeastern Louisiana was good enough to let us in their opening weekend, so we're thrilled to have all of our weekends accounted for right now because we did not at this time last week. We have two bye weeks in there; Northwestern State was our eighth different opponent, and Texas State is our other bye week. I feel good with those now that our opening weekend is done. It just got to the point where it didn't matter who or where it was. And I give Coach (Brad) Phillips a lot of credit. He was the point guy on the scheduling this year, and I know there were some sleepless nights in the last month concerning the schedule but it is a good schedule.

"We were supposed to open up with Virginia Tech, which would have been a really good series, but they had to pull out due to Covid restraints. As I look at it, we added Southern Miss for a third game; we usually play them twice so that is really good. Our midweeks look really good, and our like our byes. We have some challenging midweek ballgames, especially adding Southern Miss for a third game. All things considered with the state of athletics right now, I feel very fortunate to have the schedule that we have right now. We are at 51 games, but nobody in this country is going to play 56. And the lack of uniformity with testing protocols conference-to-conference is what really hurt fulfilling that 56-game slate. There are going to be some land mines that we have to navigate around, but I am glad that we have the schedule that we have. I feel good with it. Scheduling this year was a scramble, but it is a very challenging schedule and we look forward to it."
