Date: 8/17
Time: 7:30 p.m.-9:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads
Offensive Players of the Day: Jack Green, Fr., OL, Brandon, Miss., and Trey Simpson, So., OL, Mobile, ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Green and Simpson: "I want to recognize two guys, true freshman Jack Green and Trey Simpson. Trey has not snapped a ball all camp in a live setting and today he went every play with the twos and mixing in with the ones with Jack, and we didn't have a bad snap. Those two guys were the players of the day today for sure."
Defensive Player of the Day: Joshua Carter, So., LB, Navarre, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Carter: "I want to brag on a guy from down the road in the Panhandle, Josh Carter. You can tell he is becoming a Division I college linebacker the last two scrimmages and in tonight's practice, he will be a guy we can count on in the rotation and on special teams. I'm really proud of him, he's doing a really good job for us."
Play of the Day: On the third play of the final team period, linebacker A.J. DeShazor rushed up the middle and hit the quarterback's arm to break up a pass on a play-action play and prevent a possible big gain down field.
Team period highlights: South conducted three 10-minute team periods during the session on Monday night. The first two focused on the run-option game, while the final saw nine of the 13 run-pass-option (RPO) plays go through the air.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Monday night's workout: "I thought we had a really good day today. It was the first day of school, the kids responded really well and came out and practiced with a purpose. We got better at our running game, which was something we didn't do extremely well in the last scrimmage and we needed to improve on. Our backs ran the ball hard and did a better job of seeing the cuts. And we made a lot of improvement on the offensive line today. Once they understood the drill, I thought our defense did a better job of setting the edge on the perimeter run game. There was a lot of stuff we got better at today."
-On where the team is at this point in the preseason: "Xs and Os-wise we're probably a little bit ahead of where one would normally be. We've already covered the two-minute drill, put in the hands team, done onside kicks, short-yardage and goal line situations, we've talked about the four-minute offense. There's a lot of stuff that with those two extra weeks of walkthroughs and Zoom meetings that have helped us get ahead in some areas. But without those 15 spring practices we've had a lot less one-on-one battles, so there is a give-and-take there. I've been pleased with the conditioning of the guys, we're not all the way there yet but we're in good shape for what we had to go through without an organized team offseason where guys were working on their own."
-On what areas the team has improved in since the first scrimmage last week: "I would say the outside zone running, the backs did a better job of stretching the hole and making sure that we pressed the line of scrimmage before making a cut. Our guys up front did a better job on their reach blocks of getting their backside shoulder through and not just turning it into a turn out block, which gave the stretch part of the outside zone play a chance to work. Some of that stuff you can talk about all you want to in meetings but until you get out on the field and actually do it so they can start to see how you need to stretch the defense horizontally on that play, and if you can turn the guy out there is going to be an edge set."
Up next: South Alabama will be back on the practice field Tuesday from 3:30-5:15 p.m. at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
