MOBILE, Ala. – Seven individuals have signed National Letters-of-Intent Wednesday and will be the foundation of the first-ever University of South Alabama football recruiting class under new head coach Kane Wommack.

Both Trey Kiser (Sulphur, Okla.) and Lincoln Sefcik (Enid, Okla.) are coming to South from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M J.C., with the class also including Jason Brooks (Mobile, Ala.), Cole Daniels (Sumrall, Miss.), Dalton Hughes (Tupelo, Miss.), Edward Smith IV (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Jay'juan Townsend (Eufaula, Ala.).

"We are thrilled to welcome these new signees into our football program," said Wommack. Â "Although I have known them for only a short time, I am thankful for the work Coach Campbell and his staff put in to secure these great young men. Â I cannot wait to have them on campus and begin the work to build a truly special football program. Â I want them to be able to express themselves through this game in a way that honors who they are and where they came from. Â I am working tirelessly to build a staff that is most focused on connecting to them, men with the knowledge and ability to maximize and develop their talents and skill set.
"I take great pride and urgency in knowing our best days are in front of us!"
Although NEO did not play in the fall due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Kiser was the program's lone first-team all-Southwest Junior College Football Conference selection in 2019 after posting 55 tackles highlighted by seven for loss.  In three years at Sulphur High, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker recorded over 100 stops and also rushed for more than 3,200 yards while helping the Bulldogs reach the championship game of the state 3A playoffs when he was a senior.  Sefcik — who earned two stars from Rivals.com coming out of junior college — caught four passes for 33 yards as a redshirt freshman in '19 after sitting out the previous fall due to injury.  He caught 30 passes for 336 yards and a touchdown his senior year at Enid High, and as a junior Sefcik recorded 22 receptions for 380 yards and six scores.
Brooks ended up with 41 tackles, including five behind the line of scrimmage, this fall while helping Mobile Christian School to a 9-2 finish and a first-round victory in the state 4A playoffs.  The previous year, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound defensive back picked off a school-record nine passes — returning three for a score — while averaging better than 33 yards per kickoff return as the Leopards advanced to the championship game of the state 3A playoffs.  Smith, a 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive lineman who prepped at Central H.S., was credited with 64 stops highlighted by five sacks his senior year, adding two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.  He was chosen second-team all-state as an offensive lineman following his junior season, while as a sophomore Smith recorded 28 tackles including five sacks.  Townsend earned three stars from 247Sports.com after catching 45 balls for 645 yards and five touchdowns at Eufaula High, which finished 9-3 after winning its first-round state 6A playoff game this fall.  The 6-foot, 175-pound wide receiver also helped the Tigers to a 9-3 mark when he was a junior after posting 52 receptions for 466 yards and five scores.
Daniels is also considered a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com after playing on the varsity at Sumrall High for five years.  As a senior, the 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive lineman made 44 stops including eight behind the line while adding six rushing touchdowns on offense to help the Bobcats advance to the quarterfinals of the state 4A playoffs.  Hughes was credited with 21 tackles in two games this fall before suffering a season-ending injury, but the previous year he recorded 56 stops — a total that included 5½ sacks — while helping Tupelo H.S. reach the state 6A playoffs.  A 6-foot-4, 210-pound linebacker, he received three stars and is considered among the top 35 recruits in the state by 247Sports.com.
Both Daniels and Townsend participated in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game played in Montgomery last weekend, while Hughes was chosen to represent Mississippi prior to his injury as well.
All but Hughes are expected to enroll in school in January.
South is scheduled to make its debut under Wommack on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, against Southern Mississippi at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
